Chapter 2

“Alexis, what's wrong?" Jax asked, as she stumbled forward.

He caught her before she hit the floor. "Honey, what is it!!"  He carried her to the bed.

"Oh God, it’s Ned," she sobbed.

"What happened to Ned?"

Alexis continued sobbing, not answering his question. Jax was starting to worry. She was coming apart right before his eyes, and all he knew was it had something to do with Ned.

"Alexis,” he started to shake her gently. “What did Monica tell you about Ned?" Jax yelled. She was in her own world.  "Alexis tell me what happened!"

She finally looked as Jax with tears in her eyes. The thought of Ned fighting for his life, while she was making love to Jax was too much. "Ned was in car wreck last night,” she said softly. She was finally getting her emotions in check, and right now the most important thing was getting to hospital.  Ned needed her.

"I'll drive you." Jax reached for his clothes.

"No!"

"Alexis, you’re in no condition to drive.  Besides, your car is still at the park."

"Damn!"  She had forgotten about that. She wished other things could be forgotten as easily.  Alexis watched Jax getting dressed, feeling even more confused. As sorry as she was for not being there when Ned needed her, she was not sorry for the time she had spent with Jax. For one night he had given her something that she needed and wanted. She knew that it was something she would not feel again because she could never be with him again.

"Are you ready?" Jax asked.

Alexis jumped in surprise. "I'm ready," she whispered, wiping away the tears.

Sonny carried Carly into the penthouse. She had not spoken or even looked at him on the way home from the cemetery. Not that he could blame her after what he had said the night before. "Carly," he whispered.

She looked into his eyes and saw something different in them. Still, she didn’t speak.

"Carly are you alright?"

"No! I killed our daughter and you hate me...” her voice broke. “But, Sonny, I hate myself more than you ever could. I should never have left her alone.  She was just a baby!! How could I have been so stupid!!"

Sonny felt tears in his own eyes at the guilt that Carly had been carrying around since Abby's death; pain that he had added to.

"Carly, it wasn't your fault," he said, forcing her to meet his eyes.

She shook her head. "Yes it is. Abby would be alive if I had been watching her!"

"No, it’s not your fault. Our daughter is dead because of AJ! AJ killed our daughter. God, I'm so sorry for what I said. I was so caught up in my own grief and loss that I couldn’t see your pain.  Please forgive me.”  His voice fell to a whisper and tears rolled down his cheeks.

"Sonny.." Carly started, but he silenced her with a kiss. His hands moved to the buttons on her blouse and she fumbled with his pants.

"Carly I've missed you so much…I need you." He lifted her into his arms and started towards their bedroom

Monica told Alexis that Ned had survived the surgery but was still unconscious. Edward was there, yelling at the staff and at her for not being the kind of wife Ned deserved. She looked away from him, not able to hide her guilt.  For the first time in his life, Edward Quartermaine was right. She had not been the kind of wife that Ned deserved. Lila finally shut him up.

Alexis walked to Ned's room, stopping to look at him through the window: He looked so weak and pale. She bit her lower lip, as she opened the door, hoping that Ned would sense her presence and come back to her. She still loved him.

Alexis sat by his bed and took his hand in hers, kissing his fingers.  "Ned, baby, please wake up. I need you,” she whispered.

He didn’t move or show any sign of waking, so she continued to talk to him.  She told him how much she loved and needed him and about the life they would have if he would just come back to her.

She was unaware that Jax was standing in the doorway, hearing her declaration of love; his heart breaking.
