Chapter 7

"Alexis," Jax said, stunned that she was really there.  He wasn't too sure that he would ever see her again after their last conversation.  His sleepiness disappeared and excitement and hope consumed him.

“I saw your mother tonight," Alexis said, looking around the penthouse and suddenly wondering if she had made a mistake by coming.

Jax could see the fear in her eyes and was afraid she was about to bolt for the door before telling him what had brought her there in the first place.  "You did?"

"Yes, in the park.  She was on one of her late night jogs," Alexis explained, as she remembered Lady Jane's words.  'Listen to your heart, dear, it won't lead you astray.'  She smiled at Jax, suddenly finding the courage to listen to her heart and let it speak.

Chloe had just stepped out of the guest room and was on her way downstairs, when she heard voices.  She paused and listened, recognizing Alexis's voice.

"Jax, you were right, I do have feelings for you," Alexis started.

Jax broke into a huge goofy grin that melted all her doubts.  She knew who she wanted to be with.

"Alexis, I love you," Jax said, encouraging her to continue.

Just as Alexis was about to share her feelings with him, movement on the stairs caught her eye.

"Jax, couldn't you sleep?" Chloe called out, as she started down the stairs, wearing only one of his shirts.

Alexis looked from Jax to Chloe.  She couldn't believe that Jax would go back to Chloe after sleeping with her.

"I'm sorry.  I didn't mean to intrude on you!" Alexis said, angrily.  She was already heading for the door.

"Alexis, wait!" Jax called out, as he grabbed her arm.

"Let me go!" Alexis yelled, jerking away from him violently.  "I thought you were different, Jax!" Alexis sobbed, as she ran out of the penthouse.

Jax headed for the stairs, intending to get dressed and go after her.  He had to make her understand that nothing was going on between him and Chloe.  He hated that he had let her spend the night.  "Damn!"

"Jax, you’re not leaving me here alone?" Chloe asked from the doorway, as she realized he was about to go after Alexis.

"You'll be fine," Jax said, reaching for his keys.

Chloe was furious at Jax and Alexis.  How dare they have an affair!  Alexis was such a selfish bitch, Chloe thought.  She had Ned's love and affection, but that wasn't enough and she had to take Jax away from her too!  Thoughts of hate and revenge filled Chloe's heart.  If she couldn't have Jax's love, then no one would!

"Jax, I'm scared.  If the person that's following me sees you leave..."  Chloe chocked on a sob, as big tears started to fall from her eyes.  She trembled.

Jax was torn, like Chloe knew he would be.  "Go back to bed.  First thing in the morning we're going to the police," Jax said, praying that morning wouldn't be too late for him and Alexis.

Alexis stepped out of the elevator, tears streaking her cheeks.  She didn't bother to wipe them away.  She walked to her car and once inside, she laid her head on the steering wheel.  "How could I have been so wrong," she cried, still not believing that Jax would hurt her like this.

It dawned on her that she really had no right to be jealous or upset, after all she had been the one sending him mixed signals.  She had told him that she still loved Ned and didn't want to end her marriage.  He had every right to move on but she just couldn't believe that he had done it so quickly.  Maybe she had been wrong all along. Maybe Jax was just using her to get over Chloe.  Alexis knew in her heart that wasn't true the moment the thought entered her consciousness.

She lifted her head off the steering wheel and dried her eyes.  She started the car and put it in gear and pulled away from the curb.

Alexis knew that what her and Jax had experienced that night was real. She had never connected with anyone like that in her entire life.  It had been so powerful and intense, it had terrified her.  But maybe it wasn't meant to be, maybe her and Jax were already with the people they were destined to be with all long.

"Jason," Carly called out, stopping his retreat.  He turned, looking at her.  Carly saw the pain and tears in his eyes.  Her lip trembled and she realized that she wasn't being fair to him.

"I'm so sorry, Jason.  I thought moving away from Sonny would make things easier," Carly admitted with a defeated sigh. She knew that she had only managed to make things worse.

"But it's hasn't," Jason clarified.

"No.  I love him, Jase, and I know that hurts you," Carly said, wiping away the tears that had started to fall from her eyes.

"So what are you going to do about it?" Jason challenged.

“I don't know," Carly murmured.

"I can't live like this Carly.  I love you but I can't be here watching you pine after Sonny."

"I didn't expected you to Jason.  I'm sorry that I can't give you the love that you deserve and I hope you find someone that can," Carly said, knowing that he would be gone for good when she woke up.

"Be good to yourself, Carly.  Abby would want her mommy to be happy again," Jason said, brushing a few tears away before kissing her cheek.

She didn't say anything, she couldn't.  Carly just watched him walk toward their room.  She buried her face in her hands.  "Help me," she prayed.

The steady rhythm of his heartbeat beeping on the monitor had been so calming that it had caused Ned to drift to sleep.  Dreams of Alexis and their future filled his head and heart.

Alexis stood in the doorway, listening to the monitor and watching Ned's chest, rise and fall.  Her emotions were so complicated and conflicting.  Watching her husband sleeping, filled her heart with joy.  She just wasn't sure if it was the same joy that Jax filled her heart with.

She was about to walk away, when he called to her.  "You came back."

"Go back to sleep," Alexis said, not sure if she wanted to talk right now.

"I'm glad you came back," Ned admitted.  A cough raked his body.

"Are you okay?" Alexis asked coming into the room and reaching for the water.

"I'm fine.  I was dreaming about you."

Alexis smiled despite herself.  "Really," she whispered, touching his face.

"Alexis, I love you.  You're my life and without you my life is meaningless.  I'm sorry for being such a jerk and I swear I'll be a better husband, just tell me that you still believe in me and our love."  Ned sat watching Alexis, intently waiting for her response.

Alexis bit back a sob.  She wasn't sure if it was from guilt or love.  A few hours ago she was sure that her future was with Jax.  But now looking into Ned's eyes and seeing the love and devotion he had for her, she couldn't believe that she almost threw it all away.  And for what?  True Love.  The kind of love that you can search a whole life time for and never find, her heart answered.

She closed her eyes, as Ned touched her cheek with his hand.  She shook her head.  She had had enough of her heart for one night.

"I want to believe, Ned," Alexis said, leaning in to kiss him.

"I swear, I won't let you down again," Ned promised.

Tears streamed down her face and she nodded her head.  "I Lo......I need you too," Alexis whispered.  Ned's eyes closed and a smiled formed on his lips.
