Part 3
Part 2

11:00 P.M. Florida

Michael and Marisa were sleeping peacefully in their beds.  She'd checked on them more times tonight than usual.  For some reason, Carly just wasn't able to settle down and let herself relax and fall asleep.  She sighed as she laid down in bed again, looking over at the clock for the umpteenth time. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't help but think about Sonny and the things that Mike had said.

Had Sonny changed? Could he finally accept her for who she was, faults and all?  These questions were robbing her of her sleep.

After about thirty more minutes of tossing and turning, she finally gave up and climbed out of bed. She walked downstairs and out onto the deck, hoping a little fresh air would clear her mind.  She inhaled the night breeze and some of the stress and tension slowly melted out of her mind.

Glittering lights
Incandescent eyes
Still preserved
In my mind
In the memories I'll find solace

Sonny looked at the house from the walkway, having second thoughts about delivering the divorce papers in person.  It had seemed like such a good idea in Port Charles.  He knew that she was most likely asleep, so he turned around to leave, figuring it would be better if he just came back in the morning. He caught sight of her standing on the deck, just as he was about to walk away.  His breath caught in his throat.  She was a vision, breathtakingly beautiful, surrounded by the moonlight.

His heart ached with longing and love.  Sonny still loved her, there was no doubt in his heart. He didn't have any more excuses not to see her, since she was still awake.  He took a deep breath and walked around the side of the house toward the deck.

Never too far away
I won't let time erase
One bit of yesterday
And I have learned that
Nobody can take your place
Though we can never be
I'll keep you close to me
And I'll remember

Carly turned quickly hearing someone approaching her but the man's face was hidden by the shadows.  She didn't know whether to scream or run.  But she didn't move, she couldn't.  And when the stranger spoke her name, she knew why.

"Hello Carly," Sonny greeted her, stepping out of the shadows.

Carly grasped in shock.   She had to be dreaming.  He couldn't possibly be here.  "Sonny?" she whispered, still not trusting her eyes.

"Hi," Sonny said moving closer to her.

"What are you doing here?" Carly managed to ask.  Her heart was pounding so hard, she was sure he could hear it.  Her hands trembled with excitement and trepidation.  This was the moment that she had dreamed of and feared at the same time. She could honestly say, she never expected him to come to her.  She wondered if Mike had broken her confidence and told Sonny about Marisa.
Oh God, Carly thought.

"I can come back in the morning, if this is a bad time," Sonny said, holding her eyes captive with his intense gaze.

Carly reacted with a sudden intake of breath as she searched for something to say.  Seeing him again had thrown he, rendering her speechless.  " I …Oh, no now is fine.  What do you want?" she asked, a hint of anger in her voice.  She was angry, just as he had anticipated.

"This won't take long," Sonny promised her. She only nodded her head.

"You look great.  Florida certainly agrees with you."

"I'm sure you didn't come here just to tell me how good I look."

"No I didn't, but you do look great."

She heard a genuine warmth in his voice and couldn't help but smile.  "Thanks.  You're not so bad yourself."

He offered her that dimpled smile she remembered so well.  "But I think you know the reason I'm here."

Carly suddenly felt ill.  He had come to take Marisa away from her.  "You can take her away from me," Carly cried, becoming distraught at the prospect of losing her daughter.

"Who?  What are you talking about?" Sonny asked with a frown.

Carly bit down on her lower lip to keep it from trembling, realizing that he wasn't aware of Marisa.  "It's nothing, I'm sorry," she assured him, covering her slip quickly and getting her emotions under control.  "So what have you been putting off?"

"This."  Sonny reached into his pocket and pulled out the divorce papers.  "You'll probably be able to see them better inside."
Carly felt tears threaten to fall. She didn't have to see the papers to know what they were.

A place in time
Still belongs to us
Stays preserved in my mind
In the memories there is solace

Sonny held her gaze.  He could see the tears shining in her eyes in the moonlight.  And at that moment he wanted nothing more than rip up the papers and take her into his arms.  But he couldn't let that happen, she would only hurt him again.  "I thought it was time that we both got on with the rest of our lives."

"I see," Carly said, turning and walking inside the house.  Sonny followed her inside.

He looked around the house, taking in the life she had started without him.  "Nice place."

Carly didn't comment, her gaze locked on the papers he still held in his hand.  "Why did you bring these to me in person?" she asked, reaching for the papers.

"I didn't want you getting them in the mail or by some delivery person you didn't know," Sonny answered honestly, leaving out the fact that he wanted and needed to see her one last time.

"Oh I see, you had to come here and rub my nose in them," Carly snapped bitterly as a tear slid down her cheek before she could stop it.  She hated herself for giving him the satisfaction of letting him see how much this was affecting her.

"Carly, I didn't come here to hurt you."

"Of course you did Sonny.  I hurt you and you want to make me pay for it for the rest of my life!"

Sonny wondered if there was a hint of truth in her accusation.  Had he come here to cause her further pain?   No, he came because deep down he still loved her.  "That's not true Carly!"

"You will never be able to forgive me, will you?"

"I want to, so much that it hurts," he admitted, his voice breaking.

"I'm sorry for hurting you but my child almost opened a bomb, for God sakes.  You promised that Michael and I would be safe, Sonny.  You betrayed me too.  But I was willing to forgive you because I love you more than my hatred for your lifestyle."

Sonny stared at her, not knowing how to respond to her comments.  He was shocked by her, she had changed so much since he had last seen her.  Mike had been telling him the truth about how much she had grown and matured in the past year. "This isn't getting us anywhere."

"You're right, the past is in the past and it should stay there, but I'm truly sorry about how things worked out.  I loved you so much," Carly told him before looking down at the papers in her hands.

"I know.  I loved you too," Sonny said removing the papers from her grasp.  "Are you happy?"

"Yes."

Sonny groan inwardly.  "Are you seeing someone?"
Carly met his eyes quickly and smiled.  "I've had a few dates but nothing serious.  You?"

"No, I've been too busy with work to do much dating," he admitted.  The truth was that he couldn't let go of her and their marriage.  They were still married and he would never betray their vows in such a manner.

"Do you ever think about us and what we could have been?" Carly asked caught up in the memories of them.

Sonny too was reliving the bittersweet memories of their time together.  The fights and the hot lovemaking that always followed.  He missed her.  "Yes I think about us"

Carly smiled, happy that she had gotten him to admitted that much.  "We were good together."

"We were great together!"

Carly laughed, knowing that he was still in love with her. She could see it in his eyes and hear it in his voice.  "I still love you Sonny."

Sonny looked at her, taking in her words and knowing that she meant them. But then he had always known that she loved him.  She just didn't trust him or his ability to be the man she loved. She had to fix it, to fix him.

"I still love you too.  But love was never the problem. I don't trust you Carly."

"I'm sorry you feel that way." Carly's eyes filled with tears again.

"I want to trust you again.  You asked me why I brought the divorce papers in person. It was because I wanted to see you again.  I needed to see if I could let go of the past for both of our sakes."

Carly felt like a huge weight had been lifted off her heart.  "Can you?" she asked, afraid to get her hopes up.

Never too far away
I won't let time erase
One bit of yesterday
Cause I have learned
That Nobody can take your place
And though we can never be
I'll always think of you and me
Always remember Love
You're never too far

Sonny didn't get the chance to answer her question, as they were interrupted by a baby's cry.  Sonny looked at Carly as she looked toward the stairs.
