Reads Like A Romance

''Is he in?''

Francis looked up and raised an eyebrow. ''Mr. Corbin.'' He hesitated. ''Mr. Corinthos asked that no one....''

''I'm his father, Francis.''

''I'll check.'' Opening the door, which made Sonny look up from his position on the stairs, he sighed. ''Mike's here.''

Pinching the bridge of his nose, Sonny waved his hand and nodded. ''Let him in.''

Already in the door, Mike stared at his son. ''Carly came to me yesterday, Sonny. She was sobbing. What happened now?''
''You mean she didn't tell you?'' he asked, a small sneer on his lips.

''No,'' Mike snapped. ''I let her sleep at my place, since she has nowhere to go now. God Sonny, you kicked your wife out of your Penthouse!'' He paused, eyes narrowing. ''Is it that Angel woman? Is it?''

''No.''

''Then who!''

Alexis took that moment to come down the stairs, smiling and asking, ''How come I don't smell breakfast?'' Arms wrapping around Sonny, she looked up in alarm at his tense posture and then looked over at Mike standing before them. ''Oh.''

Blanching, he took a step back. ''I'm...''

''Excuse me,'' she whispered, taking her arms away from Sonny and walking to the kitchen.

''Sonny, I didn't...''

''Of course you didn't!'' He yelled. ''You just came in here and started going off on me.''

''What about Carly?''

Letting out a laugh, he shrugged. ''What about her?''

''She's a wreck.''

''Has been since the day I met her.''

Shocked at his son's tone, Mike shook his head. ''What's up with you?''

''Carly betrayed me. I can't...take that anymore.''

''Oh, and Alexis won't?''

''No, Alexis won't,'' her voice came from behind him.

Turning around, Mike threw up his hands in surrender.

She went on, ''I love your son. I trust him and he trusts me.''

''I never said anything about trust, Alexis.''

She sniffed.

''This is too much for one morning,'' Sonny murmured, breaking the impending silence. ''Mike, come back some other time.''

''I...''

''Another time Mike.''

Later that afternoon, after a silent breakfast and a quiet nap on the couch, she decided to go for a walk.

She left Sonny home with work that he needed to get caught up with and told him that she'd stop by the grocery store if he wanted.

So, with her hands in her pant's pockets, she felt the slip of paper with the food that he needed.

A hand briefly touched her shoulder and she turned around, gasping with fright until she saw who it was.

''Ned,'' she said, glaring.

''How are you?''

''Fine.''

''Listen, about what I said on the fourth...''

Alexis cut him off. ''Don't worry about it. You...wanted to get that off you chest, and you did.''

''You're hiding something from me, aren't you.''

''Quick one you are, Ned.''

He put his hands in his pockets and looked down at her. ''What's going on?''

''I have to run everything by you now?''

''Alexis...''

She smirked. ''Let's just say that maybe, just maybe, what you said had a grain of truth.'' With that, she turned around and started walking away.

Going after her, he grabbed her hand and turned her around.

Wincing slightly at the pressure he was putting on her arm, Alexis started to squirm.

''You won't last a day with him,'' Ned told her, sneering.

''You sure about that? How many days has it been since the fourth?''

His face fell, but the pressure remained. Regaining his composure and seeing where she was going with this, he hissed, ''So I was right.''

''Gonna go gloat now Ned?''

''Just wait, he's gonna own you some day.''

Her eyes narrowed and she leaned in, hissing, ''Listen to me Ned, no man owns me. Not in the past, not now, not in the future.'' Freeing her arm, she brought back her hand and slapped him. ''Just remember that.''

''Why you...''

''Bitch? I pride myself on that. Get this straight, we're over. Have been since I left you at the altar. I have no idea why Chloe has decided that we're made for each other even after that, but what she's telling you, must have gone through.'' She calmed herself. ''Do you find it fun finding every little thing that you find wrong in my life and magnifying it?''

Stunned, Ned took a step back.

''I can't stand it anymore. I had it with Helena, I will not have it with you. After today, if I never see you again, I won't wilt away.''

''Don't you think that's going to be hard? I mean, we live in the same city, you're representing the woman that bore AJ's son...''

''Oh, I don't think I have that job anymore.''

Taking another step back, Ned shook his head. ''Fine, if that's what you want, that's what you'll get.'' He took one last look at her. ''And when Sonny lies to you, betrays you in some way, don't start crying and saying how he was supposed to trust you.''

''Aw, don't you worry about me, if that does happen, I'm sure I can take care of myself.''

Curled up on a couch, she slipped her glasses up her nose once more, much to Sonny's amusement.

''Loose?''

Looking up, she glared playfully at him. ''What?''

''Your glasses? Maybe you should get those checked.''

''They're fine.''

''That's why you keep pushing them up your nose?''

Sticking out her tongue, she went back to book. Sighing softly, she looked over at him. ''Are we an odd couple?''

''You have to ask?''

''It's just that with Mike and Ned...''

The last name made him glare. ''You spoke to Ned.''

Alexis nodded, biting her lip. ''I ran into him while I was walking. He...said some things that made me think.''

''Lex.'' Sonny sighed. ''Yes, we're an odd couple.''

Tongue between her teeth, she smirked. ''But that's good.''

''I think you've been reading a few too many trashy romance novels, Counselor.''

''So what if I have?''

''Tell me, Lexi, how do we add up?'' he asked, crawling on top of her, smiling as he placed kisses on her neck and shoulders.

Letting the book fall to the floor, she gave a moan and murmured, ''We read like a romance.''
