Joseph and Olive Haskell
Joseph Haskell was Minnesota's first farmer.  He also helped plat Afton Village in 1855.  He was born in 1805 at Greene, Massachusetts.  After spending seven years in the area, Joseph went back east and returned with his three sisters-Mary, Clara, and Saphira Jane.  They kept house for him until he married Olive Kingman Furber in 1849.  Joseph and Olive had four children.  Daughter Helen was the first white child born in Afton Township.

Joseph had a teacher's certificate and was active in politics and education.  Afton Township's first school, the Joseph Haskell School,  was held in his home in 1855.  He also was a member of the state legislature from 1869-1871.   He was a very important person in early Afton history.
