George Baxter Masten married
Rosa Mae Salsman on May 23, 1925 in Gainesville. They spent most of their life in Cooke
County where they farmed, operated
a café, and pursued other livelihoods, including
ginning cotton and work at Tyler & Simpson wholesale grocery. In 1950, they moved to California,
where George worked at an Air Force Base and Rosa worked
in a hospital. They raised five
children, Julia Masten
Kendall, Georgia Masten Shoemaker, Mary Masten Gilbreath, Tom Masten, and
Finis Masten. All of the children attended Valley
View School. Today, Georgia and Mary both live in Wood
County. George and Rosa are buried in Sacramento,
California.
Raleigh Lee Masten married Dollye Mae McFarlin on December 3, 1930 in Oklahoma. They bought the Jeff Masten
farm in Lois in1943 which they cultivated, and also expanded into a dairy
farm. Raleigh
also managed the Lois Cotton Gin and Dollye worked at
the Denton State
School. Their daughter, Bobbye Sue, died at age 6; they then raised two sons, Mike Masten
and Tim Masten,
both of whom attended Valley View
School. Today, Mike lives in Collin
County and Tim lives in Denton
County. In 1965, Raleigh and Dollye
sold the Masten farm – which had been in the family
over 60 years - and moved to Denton.
They are buried in Valley View.
Della Virginia Masten married Lloyd
Hayes on September 25, 1924. Della grew up in Lois, but spent most of her
adult life in Dallas and Gainesville,
plus a few years in California
where she married Frank Latham. While in
Dallas, she worked in food
service. Della raised two daughters, Virginia (Ginger) Hayes Read and Janet Hayes Huffman, both of which
attended the Lois School.
Jan’s teacher was Miss Eula Stinson, who
also had a distinguished teaching career at the Valley
View School.
Today, Ginger lives in Kerr
County, Texas and Jan lives in Cleveland
County, Oklahoma. Della is buried in Valley View.
