Wanda I. Cutsforth

April 12, 1927 - April 26, 2009

Wanda Cutsforth carries the Olympic torch, Jan 22, 2002

Wanda Cutsforth's daughters remembers their mother

Wanda Albert was born in Dayton, Washington in 1927 to Arthur and Minnie Albert. The family moved for her fathers work to Seneca, Oregon and later to Idaho. Wanda graduated from Pocatello High in 1945; she attended nursing school in Idaho. Coming to Salem to complete her psychiatric training for her Registered Nurse degree, she met her future husband, Irvin Cutsforth, who worked at the Oregon State Hospital. Irv and Wanda married in Salem in 1949. Wanda worked at Salem Memorial and Salem General Hospitals until the family moved to Stayton, where she worked as a surgical nurse at Santiam Memorial Hospital. In 1964, Irv and Wanda purchased a furniture store on Highway 99E, Cutsforths Highway Furniture. Wanda continued her nursing career at Woodburn Care Center and French Prairie Care Center where she served in the capacity of Administrator and Director of Nursing. Changing from geriatrics to industrial nursing, Wanda worked at Woodburns General Foods (Birds Eye) plant until her retirement in 1987. She continued to volunteer for the American Red Cross on blood drives. She became employed by the Red Cross and worked until 2001, when her retirement became official. She continued to volunteer for flu shot clinics and kept her RN license active and in use until 2005 at the age of 78.

A child of the Depression, Wanda learned early to repair, re-use, use it up, or do without. She was a master recycler before being green was fashionable. Her family marveled at her resourcefulness as she single-handedly kept her house painted, scrapped moss off the roof and kept the rototiller in working condition for her gardening. She loved a road trip, often taking her grandchildren to points of historical interest, such as retracing the Oregon Trail. She loved the Oregon coast, and recently had participated in SOLV beach clean-ups. Wanda had a quest for knowledge, and enjoyed nature, history and geography. Her passion was her family. Her hobbies included camping, knitting, gardening, reading, swimming, quilting, pine needle basketry, traveling, photography, cross-country skiing and Volkswalking, which she took up in 1992. She was an active Volkswalker and over the years she walked in all 50 states, all the Canadian Provinces and completed several over-seas walks. Her last sanctioned walk was completed in San Francisco in 2008 when she and two of her daughters walked the Golden Gate Bridge.

Wanda proudly carried the Olympic torch locally for the 2002 Winter Games. Her daughters had nominated her for this honor based on her patriotism, community activism (Hubbard Planning Committee, Aurora Oxbarn Volunteer) and positive motivation to others. She was a practical, independent, loving, strong, no-nonsense, creative, funny, can-do person. To her daughters, she was their hero and role model. Undeterred by the cancer of the past 18 months, she continued to be an inspiration through adversity. She was as beautiful as the roses she grew.

Wanda died on April 26 at the age of 82. In remembrance of Wandas well-lived life, buy products made in the USA, thank and support a Veteran, and proudly display the American flag.
