WHAT ARE BEHAVIOR INTERVENTIONISTS ?
Please note that the description provided here is based on my own experience and knowledge in behavioral intervention.
There are many ways to call Behavior Interventionists (BIs). Behavior Therapists, ABA Tutors, and the like are all individuals who implement programs that aim to
develop or improve the skills and capabilities of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Most programs are based on ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) which is an approach that is scientifically-proven to be effective in teaching children with ASD. There are qualified professionals called Behavior Consultants who have extensive knowledge and experience in analyzing behavior and creating plans/programs for children with ASD. They are hired by parents to produce a Behavior Intervention Plan for children with autism. It is the role of BEHAVIOR THERAPISTS to implement this plan of intervention; or in simple terms, to run the programs. Although experience in Applied Behavior Analysis is an asset, training is provided in becoming an interventionist. The type of training that you will receive will depend on the Behavior Consultant, as these professionals have different types of approaches of intervention. Sessions normally run for 2 to 3 hours each shift, and the intensity of the program determines how many shifts are needed per week. It is usually the parents who hire the therapists. They determine the hourly wage which is usually based on experience and education. There is currently no set hourly rate for this type of job; but the typical starting rate is $12/hour. For the safety of the children, you should be required to obtain a recent Criminal Records Check, as this is crucial in any type of work with children. You also need to be 19 years of age or older. Some people are mistaken that providing intervention is similar to providing child care. Becoming a Behavior Interventionist is not the same as baby-sitting. It involves tremendous amount of effort and organization, and a lot of planning. It is rewarding because each single interaction with the child contributes to the child's learning. As a Behavior Interventionist, you become part of the child's family and the child's life. It truly is a life-changing experience that enrich you with knowledge and skills, and values such as patience, perseverance and optimism. |
