Choir History
Vancouver has been the home of people singing in Gaelic for more than a century. For the most part, the traditional forms of singing were preserved by individuals at ceilidhs in the home or ceilidh-concerts at the Center. Unison choirs grew out of this tradition.
The Vancouver Gaelic choir began back in the early 1980's with a small, dedicated group. They decided to change from a unison choir to 4 parts to broaden the choir's repertoire and to compete at the National Mod in Scotland. Some of those founding members are still involved and are the inspiration for all those who have joined since.

We have travelled to the Royal Mod in Scotland for Competition 4 times.

                         1985     Ft. William
                         1988     Glasgow
                         1992     Oban
                         1997     Inverness

With the exception of Glasgow, we have won a trophy every time.

We also compete in the Vancouver Mod which is held every two years during the second week of May. The last one was in 1999 and the next one is this May 2001. Competition is always strong from Seattle, Victoria and the Scottish Choirs that come each time.

In August 2000, we performed on a concert tour of Nova Scotia and Cape Breton. We performed at Highland Village days, Ceilidhs, Churches and St. Ann's Gaelic College, plus a command performance at the 'Red Shoe' during a post concert celebration. Everywhere we toured we were warmly received. I suspect this may be the first of many trips to the Maritimes.

A special thanks to Alexander Keith's, and the Glenora Distilleries for making our late night ceilidhs so entertaining!
