Bio~
Silverchair (previously known as Innocent Criminals with 4th member Tobin Finnane) was founded in 1992 by the Newcastle trio featuring Daniel Johns on guitar and vocals, Ben Gillies on drums and Chris Joannou on bass. Their big break was with the #1 single "Tomorrow" off "Frogstomp", which became the first debut album by an Australian artist to enter the national charts at #1.
Their second album, "Freak show", was released in '97 and was yet again a huge success selling 1.5 million copies worldwide.
Silverchair's next album is my personal fav - "Neon Ballroom". It was released in '99 and the basic concept behind the album was to combine more futuristic noises and classic influences to create a blend (neon being new and ballroom being old). Guest musicians on the album include David Helfgott, Paul Mac and the Sydney Orchestra.
Following Neon Ballroom's success, Daniel Johns and close friend, Paul Mac, wrote and recorded "I Can't Believe It's Not Rock" in 2000. It was originally an experimental recording but they ended up liking it and decided to release the EP.
Silverchair's next career highlight was performing at the Rock in Rio festival in Brasil on 21/1/2001 to a crowd of 250 000. Their next main gig was at the 2002 BDO.
Following this was the release of "Diorama" in mid-2002 (i think?) which was the first new album released in almost three years. Hrrm.. wat to say.. there are a couple of good tracks on the album but otherwise it's a little too ladida-ish for my liking...
