Almonzo’s Quest

Techniques for Achieving Goals

Leaping Groundhogs!! (They do leap don’t they?) Just when we thought we could write off this anachronism as myth, the little rodent comes through with an accurate prediction.

The Quest
The long and perilous journey has come to a fruitful end. Students have sharpened their problem solving skills through use of the Six Essential Strategies.  Several students were able to power all the way up to the rank of Einsteinian and will have a small celebration in the Center

Student Testimonials…”After the journey, I have changed a lot. I look at math word problems in a whole new light.” …”Almonzo’s Handy Dandy Word Book helped me.  When I wrote each strategy down, it was permanently burnt into my brain.” …”I know how to tackle problems straight on now.”…”I have learned teamwork, life skills, and the most obvious, more problem solving skills.  The Quest was a great experience. Manipulatives really helped.”  (See article on the reverse.)

We are now heading into the Time Warp and Cartographer’s Challenge where Math meets Social Studies in Time Zone Math.

Look out! Private Eye is not too far away and we will be dissecting Cow Eyeballs the week before Spring Break.(Mar. 29th – Apr 6th)  We are on the lookout for parent volunteers with a steady hand and calm spirit to help each day to insure a positive experience for the children. (This is an optional activity and your child may choose not to participate.) Please call the Center (703.494.3483), send in a note, or sign up at Family Night to let us know if you can help.

   More Thoughts :

With the New Year always comes those resolutions to do better. One thought we would like to pass along is the subject of healthy snacks.  As the holidays came upon us we began to notice that the nutritional quality of some of our students’ snacks deteriorated.  Chips, candy bars, and other greasy or highly sugared snack items are NOT appropriate.  Students are free to eat as they work during the independent research time, but snacks need to be healthy and neat so as not to interfere with the work process.

Reminders:

Evaluations - Semester evaluation packets have been given to the classroom teachers for their review and signatures.  Please return just the signature sheet and manila envelope to the Center.  You may keep all of your child’s work.

Wed. Feb 20 -  Family Night 6:30- 7:30 PM
The Center will be open again for you to drop by for an informal visit.  If you can only come for a few minutes, that’s fine. Classroom teachers and administrators from home base schools are always welcome too.

Above all, remember what really terrific children you have, and that we are a resource for you as well.
