The New Guy

Released:2002
Vanilla Ice Played: Seth (Music Store Guard)
Overview: A high-school loser (DJ Qualls) gets expelled and sent to prison. While there, his cellmate, Luther (Eddie Griffin), gives him some pointers on how to become cool in order to reinvent himself at another school. Everything is going fine until his scheme is busted by a bully from his old school.
Review:'THE New Guy" is a boy version of one of those high school comedies about the turning of a nerdy, dowdy social reject into an ultrapopular babe.
Naturally, after triumphing over an unjust status system, she realizes how important it is just to be herself.
But the filmmakers - director Ed Decter and writer Ed Kendall - came up with a imaginitive and comically promising riff on this plot by making a sojourn in prison the mechanism of their hero's transformation from hopeless nerd to cool.
Apparently, much of high school coolness for guys involves a facility for physical intimidation, so the "The New Guy" often resembles "Never Been Kissed" - crossed with a farcically inverted episode of "Scared Straight."
Some of what results is hilarious. And there's a kind of ease with which the movie assumes a thoroughly interracial youth culture that's both endearing and reassuring.
So it's a shame that "the New Guy" is so uneven, with long sections that are completely unfunny.
Senior Diz Harrison (DJ Qualls, from "Road Trip") is one of the "blips" at his Texas high school.
After an agonizing humiliation involving a badly timed erection, he's sent to a clueless counselor (Ileana Douglas in a thankless, mirthless role) who puts him on antipsychotic medication.
While on this medication Diz does something - you never find out exactly what - that lands him in a jail cell with Luther (Eddie Griffin).
Luther was a picked-on nobody at his last prison.
Now he's a cellblock kingpin and he offers to teach Diz the skills you need to become a dominant male in prison - or in high school.
Diz is so thrilled by this that on his return to school he deliberately gets himself expelled so he can spend more time being tutored by Luther and all the sympathetic guys in the big house.
It works brilliantly. Soon after Diz - who now calls himself Gill - is dropped off at his new high school in a prison van, he takes down the schoolyard bully and becomes the love object of three hottest women on campus, led by Eliza Dushku.
After a while enjoying life at the top of high school's mysterious social order, Gill then turns that universe upside down, fostering tolerance and school spirit in a sequence so fantastic that it recalls Ferris Bueller's domination of Chicago.
But then he encounters some of his friends and enemies from the bad old days . . .
There are spoofy references to "Braveheart" and "Patton" as well as shameless nods to superior teen comedies like "Can't Hardly Wait," but they are of extremely variable quality.
Lyle Lovett plays Gill's overprotective dad, convinced that his son's newfound happiness is the result of drug addiction.
And there are cameos by Gene Simmons, Tommy Lee, Kool Mo Dee, Henry Rollins, Tony Hawk, Vanilla Ice, plus teen movie fixtures Charlie and Jerry O Connell.

Welcome To Death Row
Released: 2001
Vanilla Ice Played : Rap Artist
Tagline: It Started in Compton. It Ended in Infamy.
Review: Well I must say that this documentary was quite interesting. It takes you way back to the early days of "NWA" and the friction between Eric "Easy E" Wright and the true talent of the group, Dr.Dre. It is then that Marion "Suge" Knight steps in to help but he gets taken in by the Industry and develops his own(thug)ways. And in between all of this there are people you haven't heard of talking about their whole Death Row experience but they do paint quite a picture for the audience. There are interviews with Dr.Dre, Suge Knight, and priceless interviews with Snoop Dogg that lets you know that this guy is truly a talent in more ways than one. Bottom line if you can't find a good movie to rent and you see this on the shelve, pick it up and see what all the fuss was about.
Da Hip Hop Witch

Released: 2000
Vanilla Ice Played: Himself
Tagline: One year ago, five white kids from the suburbs entered the projects in search of authentic hip hop culture. They were never heard from again....
Review: For an indie flick out there with all these other Blair Witch Spoofs, this film has it right. Granted it's not a $20 million dollar Scary Movie by Mirimax, but dude has Eminem, Mobb Deep, Killah Priest, Rah Diggah and all types of mad underground headz, The 5 white kids is tight, they look like 1st time actors but it works the same way The Blair Witch's did. The music is hot, the titles is hot, all in all it works and my hats off to these cats.

Then,Shredder returns after being kicked off a building into a garbage truck. While April does a story of Perfessor Martin Perry, who is trying to clean up toxic chemicals. One of which, mutated the turtles and Splinter. But Shredder gets ahold of the ooze and transforms a rhino and a cyotte into giant animal mutants, who must battle the turtle brothers. Armed with Perry's intellegence,a pizza delivery boy,and April. The turtles are set for another advanture. Four Stars. Still pulls off being as good as the first. Great! Excellent!
Cool As Ice

Released:1991
Vanilla Ice Played: John "Johnny" Van Owen
Synopsis: Bad boy Vanilla Ice rides into town on his "steel horse" and quickly falls for a comely, sweet-natured local girl. Danger threatens the fragile new relationship, however, when it is revealed that the young woman's parents have been in the Witness Relocation Program for the past twenty years -- and the men they put behind bars have suddenly stumbled upon their whereabouts.
Review: This is a story that focuses on the free and exilirating life of a talented hip-hop dance musician and his group as they traveled together on an adventure from one performance to the next on their tricked-up motorcycles. Vanilla Ice appears sophisticated yet principled as do most of those with him, making it safe for the sensitive intellect to enjoy the intricate beauty that abounds in "Cool As Ice." The dancing and lyrical performance of Vanilla and his crew is second-to-none in this movie and, if for nothing else, makes "Cool As Ice" worth a place in anyone's collection. The cinematography is seamless it its vivid and balanced portrayals of the characters in their diverse natural environments, indoor and out. Such beauty can be best appreciated in this movie's laserdisc format. As a bonus, one cannot miss the cool motorcycles, cars and styles. The cutting-edge pop culture, in its cleverly satirical portrayal, still keeps my friends and I entertained nearly a decade after the movie was in style. More importantly, "Cool As Ice" came out at a time when white and black rappers did not live in harmony, yet this movie was cutting-edge as it shows a nurturing trust and dignified friendship between Vanilla Ice and his African American crew. A refreshingly color-blind environment creates a rare and heartening perspective that allows for a clean appreciation of this film-- something nearly impossible to find in movies before and, especially, since. The "Lethal Weapon" series didn't come close. The man, Vanilla Ice, who retains the record for the best-selling rap album of all time (Ice Ice Baby), delivers a meaningful performance in his first movie. "Cool As Ice" is a collector's pleasure that also serves as a solid benchmark for a unique part of our history. (BG -- Aug. 30, 1999)
Teen Vid 2
