VANNASSAU BOXERS
My name is Heather Meikle and I got my first pet quality boxer at about six or seven years of age.  That was in November of 1956.

My parents first mistake.

This dog was my best friend and saw me through all the stages of growing up.  She was like a second skin to me, accompanying me to babysitting jobs, and playing tennis etc.  retrieving my balls but never crossing over the line of the tennis court.  She was at the bus stop everyday waiting for me to come home from school.  At 3pm everyday we walked along KITSILANO BEACH with my fiends.  I can remember my parents would never let me out after dark unless MARTY was with me.

Even on my first dates Marty was there.  Marty got me through all the ups and downs that teenagers go through.  Even if the locals didn't know me they knew Marty.  I was referred to as the girl with the Boxer.  Marty moved back to the BAHAMAS with me and lived out the rest of her life in a warm climate laying on pure white hot sands looking at the turquoise blue water.

I had the bug and wanted more Boxers.  So my parents got me a rescue Boxer called Bismark.  He was a tank and far too damaged to rehabilitate.  I wanted a show dog, so along cam SEAN BARON OF NASSAU, followed by a Bangaway son, called Tosca.

We went to handling classes, then fun matches and dog shows.

Marty, however, out lived them all.  When we moved back to NASSAU purebred dogs were a novelty, mostly imported from the States.  I thought I might like to try another breed after Marty passed away.  My parents sent me to Miami to buy a pair of shoes, as the shopping was much better there than the Islands.

Instead of shoes I came back with a Great Dane.  My parents at the time had Chihuahuas's.  Obviously I got a lecture.

Topaz, a golden brindle followed by Patch, a Harlequin.  The family of Danes grew.  A group of us decided we needed a Kennel Club and shorly thereafter the Club sponsored it's first International Dog Show.

It is much harder to raise dogs in the Bahamas due to Heartworm, Manges, Hookworm and Distemper.  The Government Vet took me under his wing and through trial and error he taught me alot.

We have a native dog called the "POT CAKE" which has always been a throw away dog.  Many with three legs and full of mange.  In the old days they used to lasso these poor creatures in my school yard and throw them in the back of trucks to be euthenized as they were disease ridden and unwanted.  I have rescued more than a few in my day.  Now it is recognized as THE ROYAL BAHAMIAN POT CAKE.  I believe that more people are becomming aware of their plight.

A very understanding Canadian man married me and about a dozen dogs, in the Bahamas.  He had never had a pet but was very tolerant and supportive of my dog family.  The Bank transferred us back to London, Ontario  Canada where I met Rita and Ted Smith.  Boxer Breeeders, YES!

She was a judge and she took me under her wing and taught me alot more about Boxers and showing in general.  I went to ring stewarding and handling classes.  Ted was kind enough to let me have CH BARNABY JONES OF TERIDON "BARNY" AND TERIDONS GOOD MORNING SUNSHINE, "OLIVER".  It was during this period that I really got to know some of the Boxer people.

From there we were transferred to Alberta, Canada.  It was here that I got to know Kay Munro of Beaucrest Boxers.  I continued showing.  Kay and I bred back and forth for a number of years.  We produced some very nice dogs.  I kept dogs like BEAUCREST FASHION IMAGE "KIM", VANNASSAU'S JUSTIN-TIME "JUSTIN", VANNASSAU'S REVELATION "TROY".  Kay kept VANNASSAU'S MAGIC MOMENTS and VANNASSAU STEP-IN-TIME "MONTY" to name a few.  These quality dogs were a direct result of marrying Teridon into the Beaucrest line.  There are still a few kennels that are keeping these pedigrees alive today.  Kay had the knowledge and expertise that I needed.

From there we moved to British Columbia, Canada.  During this period I got to know the Verhulst's.  Cora Verhulst was at that time a young girl.  She started handling my dogs and to this day she is still showing my dogs for me.  Larry Sinclair and Larry Ingles also did handling for Kay and myself.  The two Larry's were able to obtain Canadian and American Championships on a number of our offspring.

My husband and my old dogs all passed away at about the same time.  So I moved back to the Bahamas for a short period to collect my thoughts.

I shortly thereafter moved back to Canada and purchased two pups from Ajay's Kennel and started all over again.

I sent the best pup to the Minister of Argiculture in the Bahamas and kept AJAY'S CA SERA CA SERA "CASSEY" for myself.  She was another Marty.  She was the plainer of the two but I had a gut feeling that she would produce something nice for me.  Cassey produced three nice bitches which I kept and bred to CH EMBERSTOUCH RING O' FIRE "CODY".  The genes clicked and we got "PANDA" the first try.  CH VANNASSAU'S DREAM COME TRUE, and they did.  These dogs have gone on to produce many nice offspring for EMBERSTOUCH and myself.  I think their history and show wins speak for themselves.

My goal was to marry the old line with the new line.  I think we may have accomplished this.

I have recently married BPISS CH VANNASSAU'S POETRY IN MOTION "SASHA" to CH TRICKER'S CLASSIC VICTORY "CLIFF", who is proudly owned by TRICKER KENNELS.

Please click on MY BOXERS and then "SASHA" and "CLIFF" PUPPIES to view the puppies.

I have also recently married VANNASSAU TRIBUTES TRADONALEE "TARA" to CH MURCONNER'S MAK'N A SCENE "KAOS", from MURCONNER KENNELS.

Please click on MY BOXERS then click "TARA" and "KAOS" PUPPIES to view the puppies.

Watch for these kids in the show ring.

I strive to produce healthy, happy dogs that closely represent the standard for their breed.

I require that all our pups be raised as members of the family, in the house, with a fenced back yard where they can play safely.

We occasionally have pet and show puppies available.
