ADDRESS : THE MISLED, F…RENINGSGATAN 6E, S-211 44 MALM…, SWEDEN
Singer Martin's fave album of all time is "Disintegration" by The Cure and once you heard the latest album, "The secret sea" by Swedish band The Misled you know that they are opting for that wavepopdirection, the sort of music that was big in the eighties and the early nineties but now is only a rare breed, but from time to time such records appear and I might be surprised it was from Sweden (the alternative scene is big there, but wavepop???) and as we like the record so much we asked them to sit down and talk with us.......
HELLO, WHO ARE THE MISLED?
HI!
The Misled is a band from Sweden, Helsingborg. The band has existed since app.1995 but havent always looked and sounded like it does today.
The only original member is me, Martin Persson and Andreas Ramberg who works with me in the studio but dont appear when we playing live.
The other members are Andreas Andersson who plays keyboards, Mikael Drackner on the bas, Ulf Liedstšm on guitar and Patrik Andersson beating the crap out from the drums.
WHEN I HEARD YOUR MUSIC, I REALLY WAS AMAZED BUT IT BROUGHT ME BACK TO THE 80'S AS I HEARD BANDS LIKE THE ESSENCE , THE CHAMELEONS AND SAD LOVER AND THE GIANTS....
Of course theres been a lot of this kind of music in our lives.
We all have listen to The Cure, Depeche Mode and these kinds of groups and now we have tried to do a mixture between all this. I think weve made a good CD and the idea was to do this kind of music but with a touch of the, The Misled-sound.
No one can say that its synth or guitar style; weve had as much synth as guitars and used both real and programmed drums.
So you never know how to describe us!
From the bands you mensured I just heard one CD with The Chameleons.
But I will see if I can find the other groups and see what they sound like.
THE MISLED ARE FROM SWEDEN AND THIS COUNTRY IS KNOWN FOR IST EBM AND METAL, BUT MELANCHOLIC WAVE LIKE THE MISLED NOT REALLY...SO DO YOU FEEL A BIT LONELY OVER THERE?
Lonely we are! Haha
Yea, it's kind of lonely, Sweden are not big and that means that our music are'nt big either. We all have lived in Helsingborg (just Martin & Patrik who lives there now) where bands like Covenant and Elegant Machinery also coming from and then we have metal-bands like, Soilwork and Darkkaine who rehurse nearby us.
Our biggest crowd would be Belgium and Germany, but unfoutchantly we don't have a distribution company or a bookingagent in this countrys.
So if anyone could help us to book a smaller tour in Belgium for example we would be more than happy and it would help us a lot.
So please let us know if your interested!
THERE ARE FOUR YEARS OF SPACE BETWEEN THE DEBUT AND "THE SECRET SEA2, HOW BIG ARE DIFFERENCES YOU THINK AND IS THERE A SORT OF GROWING AS THEY SAY?
The differences are very big! First of all the vocalist is changed, Im (Martin) are singing now. We also tried to get away from the depp-rock style and do more pop-songs. And this time I recorded and mixed everything by my self to get it just like we wanted to sound. I think we succeeded and we are proud of what it turned out to! And last time when we recorded "For the Broken Heroes we where seven peoples in the studio and everyone had something to say about everything. It was a mess!! ; ) This time I was alone most of the time and didnt have to think about that every studio hour cost money.
THE ALBUM HAS BEEN MIXED IN A STUDIO CALLED THE WOOD HOOD STUDIO WHICH IS ESPECIALLY BUILT FOR THE RECORDING OF IT, PLEASE EXPLAIN....
Andreas Ramberg has a big house in the middle of nowhere in SmŒland, Sweden. Its ca. 2 miles right into the forest. It was a perfect place to be when you want something to happen in without get disturbed by traffic and all the stress in a city. When you standing outside the house and listen, you can hear a leaf falling to the ground. Amazing feeling!
And when you feel that youre stuck you can always relax with a walk in the nice forest or just take a bath in our own lake. Ha-ha.. Perfect!
IN FACT THE DEBUTALBUM MIGHT HAVE BEEN RELEASED IN 1998 BUT YOU ARE TOGETHER SINCE 1995 WHICH IS SEVEN YEARS...AND ONLY TWO ALBUMS...NOT VERY PRODUCTIVE OR NOT?
It was in the end of 95 Andreas Ramberg and I sat down and made the first songs
together. The result was a couple of songs that where recorded in The Recording Center that where owned by an American called Van Orbitson. This turned out to a 3 songs demo. The songs where, Confessions, Cope and Good Excuse, and this tape where sent everywhere in the world but with no results.
But after a couple of month a German mid-size label from Dortmund called up and said "We want you". Me and the old singer (Andre NilŽn) went down to Germany and signed the contract. Its after this period everything went the wrong directions.
We started to record the album at The Recording Center together with the two producers Van Orbitson and Mattias Simson and after 4 month hard work we where done with "For The broken Heroes".
Then the German label started to delay the release month after month. At last they said 27/1-98 is the release date.
But that day our A&R manager called me and said that he where fired and our contract didnt exist anymore. I dont know whats been happening after that with this label, but they still have the master tape and our original cover to the CD.
A month later we had the song "Good Excuse" on a compilation from the Swedish label Moriensis Productions that later that year turned out to release, "For The Broken heroes".
After "For the Broken Heroes"almost everyone left the group to study or travel the world and nothing really happened with the CD.
Then it took quite some time do new songs. We do all songs in the studio so after a while we end up just pay lots of money to be in a studio and just fooling around.
It was then we decided to build our own mobile studio. After been waiting for almost a year to find the right stuff to buy we started for real to do new songs.
This time was app. January 2001!
During the summer 2001 we looked for a company that could help us a bit and found M&A Music Art from Malmš in Sweden.
I know they had there eyes on us before, so it worked out very well.
During the fall we recorded for 3 month and released the new CD "Secret Sea"020202.
HOW ARE REACTIONS TO YOUR SOUND?
Mixture, most of the people says its really good while others want it to be harder. Sure it can be cool to play with lots of distorted guitars and so on but it can also be very hard to do songs that dont sound the same. But when we are on the stage were playing much harder.
I THINK MEN CAN SAY YOU'RE MAKING WAVEPOP WITH A DARKWAVE/GOTH-UNDERTONE, DO YOU SEE YOURSELVES AS GOTHS?
In some ways I can see why peoples can call us Goth, but its all a question of definition. I mean The Cure is sometimes called "the gods of the Goth".
OK, they where makeup and have dark cloths. In the beginning of there carrier they mad a sort of post-punk or depp-rock or what ever you can call it, and then the Goths came up. If you listen to newer Cure its pure pop! But they are still Goth in many ears!
I dont know if The Chameleons called Goth, but I dont think they do it and I think we are more like them then some real Goth bands like Sisters, love like blood or this kind of bands. Personally I dont think The Misled is Goth its more like you said, Wave pop.
THE MUSIC YOU ARE MAKING IS MELANCHOLIC AND INTIMISTIC JUST LIKE IT'S BEING MADE BY PEOPLE WHO HIDE THEMSELVES IN MUSIC, IS THIS A RIGHT PERCEPTION YOU THINK?
Maybe, its strange when you make melancholic music. Because when you feeling good you make the most depressive songs and when youre down you do the opposite, popier and happier songs. I notice that when you go threw something hard and sad you cant do anything. And a couple of weeks after you been threw it you can write about it, and then it just floats out.
To "Secret Sea" most of the lyrics are based on real stories from people that been in or around my life this last four years. So its not just words that been put together.
WHAT ARE YOUR DREAMS CONCERNING THE MISLED?
The dreams are like to many others; to survive on what you do, go on some bigger tours and to reach out to a bigger crowd.
SORRY BUT I MUST ASK...I COMPARED YOUR SOUND WITH AND ALSO THE TREES...IS YOUR ALBUM "SECRET SEA" NAMED AFTER THE DEBUT-EP FROM AND ALSO THE TREES? (IT ALSO IS CALLED SECRET SEA...)
What!! I think Ive missed something here. Hmm... This I didnt know! I just hear one song from that group and I wasnt "over-impressed"about it.
But thanks for the news!
TWO QUESTIONS I ALWAYS ASK....WHAT'S YOUR FAVE RECORD OF ALL TIME AND PLEASE STATE WHY....
I have a couple of them but if its just one I have to say Disintegration with The Cure. This record has it all, good guitars nice synth, perfect lyrics and song-melodies and a good mixture of songs, both pop-songs and some good old "Cure-songs".
WITH WHO WOULDN'T YOU MIND TO BE ALONE WITH IN AN ELEVATOR FOR 8 HOURS AND WHAT WOULD YOU DO THEN?
I think I would have all our new and old Misled members and see how many who comes out alive after 8 hours. Ha-ha
Or maybe if Im more serious a good producer like Flood.
He probably has some good .
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM THE MISLED IN THE FUTURE?
Our hopes and plannings right now is to play a couple of gigs in the UK later this year and hopefully we can get someone to help us arrange some gigs around and in Belgium too.
DO YOU WANT TO SAY SOMETHING SPECIAL TO OUR READERS?
Of course we want!
We want to thanks everyone that supports us and specially the peoples in Belgium that are
number one in showing what the think of us.
Please continue to send us mail and write in our guestbook on the Webb!
And tell your local club-owners that you want to see The Misled to play there, thats the only way to get us down there...
