I was wandering about a world, called Earth by some, and there seemed to be a bit of a strange celebration going on. It involved many drunken people with green hats and clover leaves everywhere... Green beer, and loudly sung songs which made me actually want to join in for a while.
Then all of a sudden, after a binge on the hazel shaded substance coming from every available tap in the local establishment... I began to see things. I am not normally given to see things that are not actually there, so I was somewhat curious when a tiny person with a smirk on his face and pointed ears beneath his green hat came up to me.
He beckoned me out of the men's room, past the kitchen and through a back door. Outside, there was a strange difference between the land I had been in out front, with the celebratory patrons loudly singing and dancing in the streets.
Inside, it was the same restaurant I'd found myself dragged into.
Then... Out back, the air was pure, filled with sunlight and I could make out a rainbow over the tops of the wonderfully green trees. It was a forest that extended as far as I could see, with glens and meadows and the occasional brook running through it all.
The little man disappeared, with a strange chuckle. Then when I turned around again, there was no bar, no street, no kitchen beyond.
I was in a huge and new place, a magical place.
As was my typical way, in a new place, I began to explore my surroundings. I wandered for quite a while, through the woods and down by the stream. I had walked for nearly three hours, but still the day had not waned. I was curious about that, but then I happened upon a clearing. Purely by accident I came across a sight that I have never known before, in my ... long long life.
I looked into the sky and there was the rainbow, but unlike the conventional science I had known since my youth, this was no illusion caused by rain droplets and sunlight.
This was a rainbow, plunged deeply into the forest itself! In all the colors that the Humans I know could see, and the hundreds more that I alone can. I stared up at it for many minutes, I don't really know how long I was entranced by this wonderful sight, but as I finally came out of the trance it had upon me...
I looked at the meadow and down below the edge of the rainbow there was a large kind of pot, almost like a cook pot but it was filled with things that I couldn't identify, at first.
Shining objects such as coins and baubles caught my eye, and while I do always need money wherever I travel (a long hard hold-over from my days as a Zekiran Outsider) I wasn't much interested in the gold coins but I took some anyway, leaving most behind. I didn't want to be weighed down by these things. I wondered if there was a reason I'd need them in this meadow and woodland anyway.
But then as my hand went into the pot again, just fishing around in it, I felt a smooth, rounded object which was slightly warm. Almost as if it were warmed by the sun, but it hadn't been at the top of the pot. I picked it out carefully, and examined it.
It was an egg, of all things! It was colored a golden hue, blended in with the coins and such in the pot. It was making a strange sound, now that I had it out of the pot too! I held it close to my ear, even my hearing only detected a slight movement. Whatever was in this egg was alive!
In moments, the egg cracked down the side, and I met to my great surprise a pair of tiny gleaming blue eyes! They turned colors a number of times before changing into a kind of yellowy gold, and that color I realized matched perfectly the shade of the creature's skin!
Why, it was a little Fire Lizard! I had seen these before, ages ago and far away from here!
This one crawled out of the egg shards in my hands, and perched herself on my wrist, wobbly at first but with growing confidence.
I felt her hunger, and worried: did I have anything she'd want to eat on me? I frisked myself and found a strip of dried meat ("snap into a slim jim," I think) and broke off a portion of it for the little dragon! She gobbled it up, and I distinctly felt her little mind echoing that not only was that not enough for her, it wasn't
spicy enough either! So I laughed and fed her the rest of it, no longer worried about what kind of money I'd need or if I could get back to where I'd been before.
This wonderful little gold lizard then unfurled her wings for the first time and I realized this was no ordinary fire lizard! Well, I'd found her under a rainbow after all, and the colors of the spectrum danced on her little glossy wings as she dried them in the sunlit air. Sparkling and glimmering, I almost cried at their beauty!
Seeking a name for her, I settled on Moire, as both a pun on her varied colors and how they act, and because the barmaid who'd handed me my last beer at the bar was named this!
Moire was found at the PatricsGather contest in Gallimim Weyr!
