Character History

Varden was born in the Curtis’ campaign world, Kylorus, to Elenora Kenzei, a human adventurer, and Erin Tiberius, King of the enigmatic Sylvan Elves. They met when Elenora saved him from an assassin's poisoned arrow during Tiberius' historic visit to the Human Lands. It was true love, but they had to part ways under the crushing weight of court politics.

Varden was born into a society not accepting of a bastard half-breed. Elenora took refuge with the enlightened Druids, in whose forest they lived happily. The Druids provided him with an education and Elenora, an accomplished fighter, taught him how to handle a blade.

By the time Elenora died, Varden had already begun his own adventuring career. He journeyed across the continent to deliver the sad news to Tiberius personally. His father bestowed the title of 'Erin' on him, Varden having earned it by completing the perilous adventure.

A demon and an ancient blue dragon have both fallen by his blade. He forged alliances with the Centaurs and the Barbarian Horde, both of which he called on win the Bugbear Wars.

Presumed lost at sea, he is a legend in his home world. Curtis even put the Varden legend in the forefront of his first Third Edition adventure. He was actually transported to the Forgotten Realms so I could play in "Halls of the High King,” where Varden met Elminster and prevented the resurrection of Bane.

Varden’s +3 khopesh is 3900 years old. It is named Ramtetkhan, meaning “wrath of pharaoh.” He wears his +1 Blue Dragon Armor for its impressive looks and its Lightning Resistance. He likes to make use of his Wildshape ability, most often taking the forms of bat, leopard or wolverine.

His first animal companion was originally a "woodland familiar," a wildcat named Eric. I took the name from the Monty Python skit. He is now deceased, but Varden names all his cat animal companions Eric now.

Varden is a Gallic name meaning "of the green hill," in remembrance of his parents' favorite meeting place. Kenzei came from "Bob and Doug McKenzie," my favorite comedy act at the time.
