THE ATHAME & THE WAND

The Athame is difficult to make yourself, not too meny of us have the ability or the equipment to smith metal! There are ways however to have an affordable Athame that has your own essense in it. Wands are really easy to make yourself! Its a lot fun plus you have something of you in it. I'll have photos up as soon as I get them back

THE ATHAME

A good place to look for an appropiate knife would be Pawn Shops, Thrift Stores, Larger grocery stores, Army/Navy shops, and Hardware stores, a lot of hardware stores carry knives. Do some phone calling first so you aren't running all over.

1) This one will only cost $4.00-$5.00 depending on which part of the country you live in. Simply buy an Ekco Oyster Knife It is the correct size and shape, has a wooden handle that can be painted, is the right wieght ( don't want something too heavy to be holding for a while) and is stainless steel. It really should be an Ekco brand Oyster Knife, thier oyster Knife is the "New Haven" style Oyster Knife, the other styles wouldnt really be all that suitable because they look similar to a buffed up ice pick.

The Athame below is
an "Ecko Oyster Knife" that
I painted black and dedicated.

2) You can buy a knife, remove the handle and put one on yourself. Look around your yard or nieghborhood so that it will be from your area. I usually find a piece fallen from the tree, but if you cut a piece from a tree, tell the tree why you need it and give the tree thanks, plus an offering, maybe some fertilizer. If you cut it from a tree, you will also have to let it dry out before you do the rest of the procedure. Measure it againsn't the original knife handle, sand it well. The next thing to be done is either to carve one end of it a little bit smaller then the rest of the piece so you can fit it into the bottom part of the knife, or, carve out the center of it in order to fit the knfie piece into the new handle. To secure it, either way, I would recommend using Goop. Doesn't matter what kind of Goop, as Goop is Goop. This stuff is REALLY strong! It dries to hard rubbery substance that holds forever. Now you can either paint it, or put a couple of coats of Clear Seal or Polyurethane on it leaving it natural. I'd coat it with something either way to protect it.

THE WOODEN WAND

You will need:
Piece of wood
knife
Goop
Crystle (or whatever your going to tip it with)
Wire; silver, copper, or leather strips (to wrap the end)
Sand paper
Clear seal or Polyurethane
Paint (optional)
Decorations (optional)

Below is
one of my favorites!
I usually put
Crystal tips on all my wands.

O.k., for my favorite! To make your own wand, again:
1) Go into your yard or around your nieghborhood, so the wood will be from your area. As stated above, I usually find a piece fallen from the tree, but if you cut a piece from a tree, tell the tree why you need it and give the tree thanks, plus an offering, maybe some fertilizer. If you cut it from a tree, you will also have to let it dry out before you do the rest of the procedure. Try to have a piece fairly straight, but a little bit of twist and turn to it makes it pretty and unique. The wand can be any size, but typicaly, it is the legnth from your elbow, to the finger tips of your hand.
2) Next you need to sand it well so it is smooth
3) Now your ready to hollow out an end of it, the end you want to put something into. It can be a crystal, stone, river rock, small baby pinecone, whatever appeals to you. I usually use a crystle. To hollow it out, you can use a knife or a exacto knife (also called a carpet knife, box opener ect)
4) Next you need to either paint it your choosen color or, as I usually do, coat it with Clear Seal, or Ployurethane. Let it dry well at least overnight, preferably 24 hours.
5) When dry, place a dab of Goop into the hollowed out end, and place your choosen object into it. Let dry 24 hours.
6) When dry, you may wrap where the wand meets your choosen object with silver or copper wire or thin leather strips. I usually use thin sterling silver wire from the crafts store.
Your wand may now be decorated with feathers, shells, beads, or left as is, which ever you wish. It's ready to be consecrated.

I decorated this
copper wand with
the traditions of my heritage.
Copper wands are
great for energy, however
this one hangs on the wall as I
don't use it in ritual.

THE COPPER WAND

You will need:
1 peice of copper tube, apx. legnth from your elbow to your finger tips; 1/2" t0 1" diameter. your choice
1 cap (for one end of the tube)
Goop
Wire; silver, copper, or leather strips (to wrap the end)
object to be placed ad the tip
Thick piece of copper wire (to go inside the copper tube optional)
Decorations (optional)

1) Go to a hardware store to purchase the copper tube, the cap (the end piece), and the larger wire to go inside if you choose to use it. Have them cut it to your desired length, and have them cut one end of it, length wise, about 1/2" to 1", in a cross.
2) When you get it home, if you have choosen to put the wire (if not, skip to # 3) inside, twist it in to a spiril sort of shape and insert it inside the tube, so it is reaching from one end to the other. This gives it a bit more energy generating power.
3) Goop the cap on the end NOT cut. Take a pair of plyers and spread apart the cut area on the other end, this is where you will place your choosen object.
4) Now place the object in the end, you'll have to manuver the cut pieces and your object to get it just right, and Goop it in place. Let dry 24 hours.
5) Wrap the end where the object goes into the tube with what you have choosen to use.
NOTE: You can wrap the length of the wand with leather or suade and add feathers and beads, but Use your imagination to decorate to make it you own.

Brightest Blessings
