Chapter 7 Vocabulary

Binary compounds- compounds composed of two different elements

Empirical formula-consists of the symbols for the elements combined, with subscripts showing the smallest whole-number ratio of atoms

Formula mass- any compound or polyatomic ion is the sum of the average atomic masses of all the atoms represented in the formula

Monatomic ions- ions formed from a single atom

Nomenclature- methods of naming chemical compounds

Oxidation states- assignd to atoms in molecules, including molecular ions, to show the general distribution of electrons among the bonded atoms

Oxyacids- acids containing hydrogen, oxygen, and a third element

Oxyanions- polyatomic ions that contain oxygen

Percent composition-the percent by mass of each element in the compound

Salt- an ionic compound composed of a cation
