I never knew to much about my Johnson family ties. It seemed that I couldn't find to much out about them. Then on July 27, 2000 I finally got to go back to Tazewell Va for the second time . I had decided that I was going to try to work mainly on my Johnson's. While in the small room on the second floor of the Tazewell Courthouse my search began. I searched in silence for a while. There was one other woman in the room with me. She was doing some research for a friend. I looked for the man I know to be my great-grandfather Isaac Johnson in the file cabinet of marriages for males. No luck ! So I started on the female marriage file cabinet looking for Linnie Bowling my great grandmother. Again No Luck !!! I must have made some remark out loud. It was unnerving for me to think I had traveled nearly four hours only to strike out again. The nice lady ask me who I was searching for and I told her. She said " Well I do believe that I saw that name Isaac Johnson only this morning. She went to the file cabinet and set down on the floor and started looking. And lo and behold she had. The file cabinets are in alphbetical order Well they are suppose to be and it says plainly on the cabinet DO NOT REMOVE CARD FROM INDEX . Well poor old Isaac had been removed. He was nearly in the K's. His card said married Linna Boling. There was my other problem. Linnie was listed as Linna Boling. Problem solved !!! Hurray !! I thanked the woman over and over again. Then she said she was 56 and didn't know if would be able to get back up by the time she finished her search in the cabinets for what she was looking for . I assured her all she had to do was yell and I would surely come and help her. I thanked her again. She only smiled and said she was glad to help. I wish I had gotten her name. Well , I found the book for the marriage Bk 3 and found the listing. Issac Johnson 19 son of Daniel and Letticia Johnson married Linnie Bowling(Boling) 16 daughter of D.B. and Louisa Boling married on Feb 18, 1869 in Tazewell co. Va. Well that's a good start I thought. Ok now I went to look for Daniel, Isaac's father. I found that a Daniel Johnson married Tisha Gross on April 24, 1846. married by William McGuire. Could this be my Daniel ? Ok , Off to the library to search some census. On the 1860 census this is what I found Daniel Johnson---- 60 Letitia---------------40 William--------------17 Elbert----------------15 Sarah----------------12 ISAAC--------------10 Ok great now lets move on. in 1870 I found that Isaac was living with Linnie's parents David Boling------43 Louisa--------------43 Louisa--------------11 Martha--------------8 Margaret------------6 Isaac Johnson -----19 Laborer Louisa???-----------16 William D. ---------2/12

I could find nothing more on Letitia Gross on that trip. Although I did find some Gross families on the census I couldn't link her to anyone. When I returned home I started hitting the message boards. This is what I got there. A Jerry Cline says that Daniel is the son of Isaac Johns(t)on 1775-1833 and Wife Sarah ? 1775-1840's? Married in Tazewell 1795. Here's the list of their children ( may not be in order of ages) Cornelius, Daniel, Squire, Mary who m/ Daniel Young, Elender m/ Asa Harper, Isacc Jr., Jackson, John, William, George, Harrison, Sarah Jr. , and one unknown who m/ John Elswich. Jerry says this information comes from " Tazewell Order Book in 1830's" |
