In a letter I found in my mamaw Lillian's Bible was an account of the events in her life she wrote: |
" I met Victor G. Lockhart on Nov. 6, 1921. It was a sunday night. My girlfriend Mary Pugh and I was on our way to church when a Maxwell Coupe pulled over to the curb and stopped. Vic's friend Copenhagen was with him. " |
" Mary and me didn't except their invitation to go for a ride. Then he put Copenhagen out and took me home from church. We went to Princeton on Monday night the 7th. We went for a ride on Tuesday night the 8th and the 9th and on the 10th we decided to be married." |
"We went to the home of Mr. Bowling the clerk of courts. He was on a hunting trip so we waited until 12 midnight. When he arrived he ask my age which was 19, Oct 8th, so he said he couldn't give us a license unless I had a sister or brother there for a witness." |
"So from there we went to Tazewell, Va. It was 2 o'clock and Thursday the 11th. We had breakfast and waited until the courthouse opened. They wouldn't give us a license, so we went and got Betty my sis and went back to Tazewell, got the license and was married by Rev. T.A. Repass in the court house at 4:20 on Nov.11 , 1921." |
She went on to say that Vic went to work for Ben McCullock in Bluefield W V. and they lived on Halifax street when Wallace was born. Then they moved to Roger Street and then Greenbrier and later to Bloom Street were their second son Robert was born. Their third son Jack ( my father ) was born there too. |
She said they came to Portsmouth, Ohio in 1929 and Vic went to work at Wheeling Steel Mill. Then on Oct. 12 ,1930 their fourth son Ralph was born. On March 10, 1932 they moved into 1225 North Ave. Vic went to work at Daehler's Funeral home in Jan 1933. |
I have very fond memories of 1225 North ave. Portsmouth , Ohio. and my grandparents too. Mamaw and papaw lived there the rest of papaw's life. Papaw Vic died on March 11, 1971. Mamaw remained at the house until 1976 when she moved next door to her son Robert in Coal Grove, Ohio. |
Mamaw out lived all her children and all her brothers and sisters. She died on June 11 , 1996 at about 2 am. at the age of 93. My sister Brenda and I held her hand and told her goodbye and that we loved her as she took her last breath. |

Papaw Victor was buried as he had always wanted to be, at the foot of the grave of his father, James Robert Lockhart in Greenlawn cemetery in Portsmouth , Ohio. Mamaw Lillian was buried in Mt. Zion cemetery in Sand Hill, Ky. Close to three of her sons. |
