Course Title:   Practical Nursing 
Length of Program: High School Extended Section (HSE) 18 months 
Evening Weekend Section (EWE) 24 months
Units of Credit for High School Graduation:
3 Credits
Articulation: Norfolk State University, Thomas Nelson Community College, and Tidewater Community College.
Industry Certifications: Accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and Approved by the Virginia Department of Education and the Virginia Board of Nursing.
Description:  The practical nursing program offers an eighteen-month course of study for high school seniors and adults. (When there are sufficient numbers of adult applicants, an Evening Weekend Section offers a twenty-four month course of study for adults.) The program is divided into courses: Practical Nursing I and Practical Nursing II. Practical Nursing I offers classroom , laboratory, and clinical skill performances. High school seniors receive three credits for the successful completion of Practical Nursing I. Practical Nursing II offers subject matter concurrent with nursing care assignments in local hospitals , clinics, nursing homes, and physician's offices.
Affiliation Agreements:  Students may be assigned clinical rotations and/or observational experiences at affiliating agencies. Currently they are: Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters, Kempsville Center, Lake Taylor Hospital, Sentara Southside Hospitals, and Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. Students may also be assigned observational experiences at the following: Indian Lakes Dialysis Center, Tidewater Perinatal Center, Tidewater Physicians for Women, Virginia Beach Dialysis Center, and Virginia Beach City Public Schools various elementary and middle school clinics.
Special Course Features: Upon successful completion of the program objectives, the graduate is eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nursing to become a licensed practical/vocational nurse.
Pre-requisites/Requirements Virginia Beach High School Seniors: Algebra I with a final grade of "C" or better; a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0; a senior year status; acceptable health, must be able to meet the physical requirements of the course; and documentation of attendance at an information sharing session with a faculty member. Keyboarding is recommended. 
Pre-requisites/Requirements  -- Adults (HSE &EWE) Sections: Official high school transcript or GED record; passing scores on the Revised Psychological Services  Bureau (PSB) -- Aptitude for Practical Nursing Examination; acceptable health, must be able to meet the physical requirements of the course; three satisfactory professional references, one of which must be from a recent employer, if applicable; and documentation of attendance at an information sharing session with a faculty member.
Cost of Program -- Total Estimated  Expenses: HSE Section:  High School seniors/Graduates - $1,172.50
                                 Adults - $3,500.00
EWE Section: $5,000.00
Clothing/Tools - Requirements: Include specific uniform, photo ID, textbooks, stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, bandage scissors, and hemostat.
Safety Requirements: Follow Standards of Nursing Practice and Standards of Care as well as OSHA guidelines for industry.
Student Organization: Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) $16.50
Application Deadlines: Adults EWE & HSE Sections - May 15. High School Juniors (applying for Senior year), check with your Guidance Counselor.
