These paintings, by the Congolese artist Mulamba, were found on a website targetting Western consumers ready to use their Master Cards to satisfy an appetite for the "exotic." On the internet, it is difficult to find examples of Congolese art other than the ever-popular "traditional" statuettes, and the fact that these are meant to be bought by foreigners gives insight into the broader nature of the African-Western relationship. The paintings still, of course, wonderful works of art that can be appreciated for both their stylistic and situational value, beyond the typical chauvinistic European notions of "high art." |
