Chapter 23

There she sat, biting her nails and tapping her pen nervously. What was she gonna do? How did she stop herself from thinking about him? Damnit all, it wasn't fair! She wasn't supposed to be having these thoughts, not about him anyway.  She shouldn't have kissed him last night, shouldn't have let him kiss her. Most of all she shouldn't have not wanted him to stop. She was playing with fire, but it seemed that whenever she was with Nick, she lost all rational thought.

Shane, she'd call Shane. She'd hear his voice and she'd forget what'd happened last night. Yes, Shane was just what she needed right now. She fumbled to pick up the phone, frantically dialing the number. The tapping of her pen increased. "Come on Shane, pick up please." She muttered.

"Hi this is Shane, I'm not here to take your call..." The answering machine kicked on.

"Damnit!" Keyana sighed, she waited for the beep and left her message. "Hi baby. Just calling cause I missed you. I should be here all day, so far all of my appointments are still on. So give me a call, I may be out for lunch, but I'll be back at around one-thirty. Talk with you soon. Bye." She hung up and slumped back in her chair throwing her pen on the desk. She had to get her mind of him. She grabbed the file in her box and started to look it over. She'd immerse herself in work, that always worked when she needed distraction. Turning to face her computer, she brought up the report and started typing.

Two hours and four clients later, Keyana was thoroughly absorbed in work and not even thinking about Nick. Her stomach, however, had a different thought as it rumbled loudly.

"Sounds like someone's hungry. I guess I'm just in time."

Keyana's eyes widened and she turned to look at Nick, he was standing in her doorway smiling. She forced herself to remain calm and cool, taking a few deep breaths she smiled coolly. "Nick, you don't have an appointment. What can I do for you?"

"May I?" He pointed to the chair.

"Please."

Nick smiled, coming over to sit. "Great. I stopped by to see how you were and to ask you something."

Keyana raised an eyebrow. "Oh? What's that?"

"I wanted to know if you wanted to go out for lunch. By the sound of it, your tummy's all for it." He grinned.

Keyana looked at him blandly. "I never go out for lunch, usually just grab something from the deli down the street and come back to continue working." No, she wouldn't fall for it. She was stronger than that.

"Shame on you! Not acceptable. It's noon and we're having lunch together and I won't take no for an answer." Nick stated, standing up. "Come on." He walked out the office and stopped by Lumien's desk, hands on his hips. He gestured with his head again.

Keyana, looked down over at her picture of her and Shane. Flinching, she slammed it down  on the desk and grabbed her purse before walking out. She locked the door before walking over to join Nick. Ok, so maybe she wasn't that strong.
