Chapter 3
AJ stared at her. "You need, my help? How?"
She rubbed at the back of her neck. "I don't expect you to fully understand exactly what's going on, but basically there's someone, a man who's out there on a killing rampage. I have to find him."
"A man killing people, isn't that what the cops are for?"
"He's a vampire Alex."
"Oh, I guess that does make a slight difference."
"Oh yeah, just slightly." She rolled her eyes.
"So where do I come in?"
"I need you to watch out during the day for me. My sources tell me that he's headed towards this area. You know I can't go out during the day, so I need for you to report back any weird things or whatever."
"Whoa, whoa wait a minute here, what's going on? Why's some fucked up dude killing people? He crazy or something?"
"It's a lot more than that. He's not crazy, he's smart, very smart and dangerous. He's extremely powerful in the vampire world, and he's trying to start a colony of vampires so that he can eventually take over the entire world."
"Take over, the world?"
"I know, sounds like a bad horror movie, but it's the truth."
"Alright let me get this straight, this guy wants to kill people and rule the world?"
"Right, after he's converted everyone of course."
"Converted?"
"Yeah, made you all vampires." She chuckled as he paled. "Relax Alex, that's what I'm trying to prevent."
"So, why you?"
"Why me?"
"Yeah, why you? You the chosen one or something?"
"Hardly. I belong to a society, a vampire society if you will. I guess you could say we're kinda like the good guys. I was informed of Jareth's return to America and put on alert."
"Jareth?"
"That's his name."
"Oh."
"Basically I need you to be on the lookout for any odd conversations, or weird acting people you know, pale, wears sunglasses, that kinda thing."
"I don't know if I can do that. I mean, come on, I'll be too busy to focus on things like that."
"Believe me Alex, you won't have to focus. This man is brutal, and the people he converts are usually on the point of becoming zombies anyway, an empty shell. They're not very smart and they're under his control. Every now and then he'll create one to be his second, someone almost as smart and as intelligent at he is. Not many though, most of them are made to serve him only, to follow his orders. This time his order is to convert as many as possible."
"So what are you going to do to stop him?"
"Kill him."
"You?! You're joking right? A little thing like you? Come on, you're gonna call for back up right? What about your society?"
"Don't let my size fool you Alex. I'm more deadly than you can ever imagine. As far as my society, we're small. We don't have enough people, so if I do happen to come across Jareth and have to fight him then I will. If I die, someone will just go on and take over. It's that simple."
"Die? You mean you can die?"
She stared at him. "Of course I can. Unfortunately the whole stake through the heart thing is true, that and vampire kill vampire also."
"You'd risk your, immortal life to kill this guy to save the world? Humans?"
She nodded.
"But, aren't we the enemy?"
She laughed. "No, you're our sustenance. Not all vampires are bad Alex."
AJ rubbed at his head. "This is just too damn much."
"I know it is."
"Do you report to your society or whatever, let them know of your progress?"
"I will be, yes."
"And you want me to be on the lookout for weird shit and all? You realize I'm only going to be here for a few days right?"
"I know, he's never usually in one area for more than a few days, too risky, but he leaves some of his people in each place he goes."
"So what, I mean what do you do if you find him?"
"I already told you, I kill him."
"If you fail, I don't just mean you, but everyone. If no one stops him, what then?"
"Then the world will know terror to the likes of which it has never seen before."
He swallowed hard. "So you kill him ok, what happens to all the vampires?"
"Well to the ones who aren't totally lost, they return to their mortal selves. For the others though, they die too. See, you can be a vampire and be like me. Look human in a way and still be mentally stable. On the other hand as I mentioned before, you can be more like a zombie. Zombies are ghouls who kill shamelessly, they too are immortal but, empty inside. There is no turning back." She looked away quickly, standing and walking over to the window. "I will come to you each night for you to report. Are you in, will you help me Alex?" She held her breath, waiting.
He watched as she stood there, looking out the window. Her small frame casting shadows over the room, her body lithe and defined, she was a creature of the darkness and she was absolutely beautiful. She turned just then, to stare at him, her eyes wide. He knew then that he could deny her nothing. "Alright, I'll do it."
