Chapter 36

"...It is reported that the worst of the storm is on it's way. It is advised that people remain indoors and seal up any windows or areas that may bring in any unnecessary wind from outside, and to conserve food and water for as long as possible since knowing when travel will be possible again is uncertain. Officials are asking for everyone to be prepared with all necessities and to once again make no unnecessary trips or travel anywhere until the storm lifts."

Nyla rubbed at her eyes, the worse was still yet to come. She looked over at Nick who sighed.

"Damn, just when I thought it couldn't get any worse."

"Don't you know Nick? It can ALWAYS get worse." Nyla groaned, shaking her head.

"I see that now. Well, I think we should do another quick inventory run, see what we have and maybe pull the water and stuff from off the step outside."

"Yeah sounds good." Nyla stood and headed over, opening the door, grabbing the stuff and starting back.

Not much had been said since they'd woken up that morning. She never asked what Celeste had said to him and he never offered. It really wasn't her business, but she had to admit it she was curious. Nick rarely ever lost his temper or yelled, but whatever Celeste had said to him last night had upset him deeply.

He was quiet and reserved, solemn which wasn't good for her, things were so serious right now that she could've used his warped sense of humor to lighten things. Of course she wouldn't force him or anything, just hoped that maybe as the day went on, he'd feel better.

After setting the water and the vegetables down, she sat in one of the chairs. "Ok, so let's have it."

"Alright, here's what we have left. For supplies, we have the flashlight which we haven't used yet at all. Then we have all the batteries still,  we're down to four candles, we still have the matches, but we're running kinda low. Do you still the ones you brought with you?"

Nyla riffled through her bag and grabbed the four small boxes of matches. "Check!" She called, tossing them into the pile.

"Ok cool, then we have the blankets still, two left. We put the others on our beds, but I think we should take these two and give each one."

She nodded, "Ok."

"I mean, we still have the silverware and tea kettle, sponges and whatever, but I don't think we'll need those right now. We have em just incase though."

"Right, and what about the food?"

"Alright, here it is. We have four bags of Doritos..."

"I'm surprised you haven't eaten more than that." Nyla smirked.

"I know I know, but I could use a little help ya know, I mean, as much as I love junk food, it'd still take me a while to get through five super sized bags of Doritos and anything else, no matter how much I love em."

"I guess."

Nick chuckled, going on. "Ok, so the Doritos, we still have a full two bags of Lays, one and a half bags of Corn Nuts, half a bag of carrots and celery each, ten bottles of water, one full container of dip, nine cans of pop, one bag of pretzels, one and three quarters bags of popcorn, And almost full bags of trail mix and nuts, and surprisingly, almost all of the Rice Krispy Treats left too."

"I don't know how that happened with you around."

"Me either." Nick frowned, he looked truly crushed. "Man, I gotta catch up."

Nyla laughed, shaking her head. "All and all not too bad. At this rate, we may even end up having stuff left over."

Nick smiled a bit, "Yeah, let's hope."

"Well, I don't know what we're gonna do about the dip, it has to stay refrigerated, we can leave it outside if ya want, I don't want it to spoil."

Nick shrugged, "Doesn't matter to me either way."

"Well, I think I'll leave it out there, worse comes to worse, we have frozen dip." She grinned, Nick smiled weakly then looked away. She wished he wasn't so upset, she couldn't believe how upset she was at Celeste for making him so angry. Walking over, she set the dip back out and started back over again.

"Ok, let's start getting ready, making up beds adding blankets and getting the candles set and whatever." Nick announced.

They worked quickly, getting ready for the storm that would come.
