Chapter 6

"You should get those, they look cute on you." Erin announced.

"Erin, I don't need another pair of pants." Nyla groaned.

"Then why'd you try them on hmm?"

"Cause you insisted!"

"I did not! I simply stated that it'd be a good idea to try them on."

"You threatened to yell through out the store that I have a huge ass if I didn't!"

Erin shrugged, "That's my way of simply stating something."

Nyla groaned, rolling her eyes and headed back into the dressing room. "Scott and I were at my house last night after bowling, just hanging out and whatever." She started.

"Hanging out huh?"

"Yes, hanging out."

"Would that include sucking face maybe?"

"God Erin!"

"Ok so it does, go on."

Nyla sighed. "Anyway, so yeah, we're hanging out and then what happens? Mom calls!"

"Ugh, not in the middle of a make out session or were the clothes off at that point?"

"Moving on...so we're talking and do you know what Mom asks me?"

"What?"

"If I've talked to Nick lately! Can you believe that?"

"So?"

"So, I'm with Scott and she's asking about my ex! My ex from three years ago."

"Nick is someone you dated for three years Nyla, it's not like it's been that long since you two broke up."
"It's been almost a year and Mom's STILL on my case about him."

"Wait wait, I thought she was getting on your case about you and Scott settling down and shit."

"She is, but she also mentions in every conversation when I say I'm not ready, that I thought I was ready with Nick."

"So if, you're so over him and the whole relationship, why does the mention of him bother you so much?"

"It doesn't! It's just, I'm with Scott, that's just not right you know? Bringing him up in every conversation. He's not in my life like that anymore."

"Oh."

"Yeah, oh. So that pretty much put a damper on the rest of the evening. After I hung up, Scott wanted to pick back up, but I just...just...couldn't." She opened the door, stepping out; pants slung over her arm, slumping down in one of the chairs that lined the various rooms.

"Why?"

"Why? Why?! I'll tell ya why! Cause everytime I closed my eyes, I saw his face, his smile, his lips! I mean for gods sake I was fine up until Mom had to mention him. Lately I don't know what's wrong with me. I keep in contact with the rest of the guys, and there's bowling on Friday and he never bothered me before. But now, I just can't seem to stop thinking about him."

"I knew you weren't over him like you said you were."

"But I am! Nobody gets that I am! I'm fine!"

"Nyla, you dated Nick from the time you were twenty till you were twenty two! Those are some of the most important years of your life. You guys were there for each other during some hard times. You never did seem to have closure. One wouldn't think you'd be over him in a little less than a year. What's so wrong with admitting that? Did those three years mean nothing to you? Did HE mean nothing to you?"
That was her problem, he meant too much to her.

"Of course he did, he was a great guy, he still is. But I've moved on and so has he. It'd be nice if everyone else realized that."

Erin sighed. "You're so stubborn, do you know that?"

"Going on with my life and not wanting to dwell on the past makes me stubborn?"

"Yes when you don't want to deal with the past, it makes you very stubborn."

Nyla sighed. "I've dealt with the past, I truly have. You saw the way I moped around for months after. I wasn't really happy again until I met Scott."

"Yeah, a cover up for whatever you were feeling."

"Are you saying that Scott is a rebound relationship?" Nyla stopped, staring hard at her friend.

"I'm not saying anything Nyla. I'm just saying not to just write things off so quickly without taking the time to fully understand them, without knowing your feelings, the situation."

She looked away quickly. She knew the situation all right, she knew it. No one could tell her any differently.

"You never did tell anyone, why did you two break up anyway?"

Nyla shrugged. "Was for the best."

"That's what you kept saying, but there's more isn't there? What aren't you telling anyone?"

"There's nothing else to tell anyone and if there were, why is it anyone else's business besides mine and Nick's?"

Erin raised an eyebrow, staring at her.

Nyla groaned. "Whatever, like I could keep it from you anyway Erin."

"Damn straight. I know you're hiding something, I'll figure out what it is, you watch. You know I'm persistent."

"Yeah I know, you Taurus's are something else."

Erin grinned. "Now come on, I want you to buy me a slushy."

Nyla smiled, following Erin to the counter. No, there was nothing more to tell anyone, no one needed to know why. She refused to relive it over and over again and hear the same thing he'd said. What had happened between the two of them would stay between the two of them.
