Chapter 21

She gathered her things up and started out the door.

"All finished Illana?"

"Yes Mr. Mathstead."

"Have a good evening."

"Thanks, you too."  Ever since that one time when she threatened to leave, her boss was a lot nicer to her. She chuckled to herself as she stepped out of the office. After a quick wave to Kris, she left and headed to her car. She replayed last night's events over in her mind. She still was trying to figure out why she'd told Nick to try to work on his relationship. Vanessa was the one who'd stopped the whole thing. Sliding into her seat she started the engine.

Who was she fooling? Nick was better off without Vanessa, but it really wasn't her place to tell him that. Still, she felt she wasn't helping the situation by hanging out with him so much, but she couldn't help it. She knew how much he missed the interaction with the opposite sex, and sure he had his fans, but he didn't have a solid relationship with any of them. That he was supposed to be getting from Vanessa and she'd failed him. What it all boiled down to, was the fact that she was scared of just how close she was getting to Nick. Pulling out of the parking lot, she headed home.  ************************************************************************
She started up to her apartment, when she noticed someone sitting outside. She made her way over and stopped. "Uhh...hi."

"Hey. Can we talk? I gotta tell you something you won't believe."

"Sure, come on in."

Illana put the key in and started up to her apartment. Once they made their way up, Illana let them in and she hung her coat up. "So Vanessa, what's up?" She asked as she watched her sit down.

"Well after you left last night, I headed home. Guess what happened?"

Illana looked at her. He didn't, he couldn't have. "What?"

"Nick called me! Can you believe it!?" Vanessa grinned.

Well she really didn't have anyone to blame but herself. She'd told him to think about it. "Well, what happened?"

"Not much really, he called and all we really said was hi and shit. I knew it." She laughed.

Illana narrowed her eyes. "Knew...what?"

"That he was miserable without me, see and that's proof." She grinned.

If she wasn't so tired, she'd ring her fuckin' neck. And Nick, what was he thinking!? "I swear, what is wrong with you? Are you that fuckin' conceited that you think he can't go on without you?" Illana spat.

"Well for god's sake Illana, he called me didn't he?! What else do you need?"

"Get out." She whispered coldly.

Vanessa's eyes widened. "Excuse me?"

"Out, get out. I don't feel like listening to your shit tonight ok? I'm tired and if you stay any longer and keep talking the bullshit that you are, I may say or do something I'll regret. Get out."

Vanessa stared at her in shock. "Umm...ok. Bye." She muttered, quickly heading out the door.

Illana slumped down on the couch, she couldn't even conceive of the anger that was coursing through her. Nick was only doing what she'd suggested he do, so she couldn't blame him. She'd lead him right to it, and Vanessa. Her arrogance and conceit left much to be desired. She couldn't let her go on thinking that Nick was a mess, she knew better. It was almost as if Vanessa needed to believe that, just to make herself feel good. Maybe she knew she'd made a mistake breaking up with him.  She knew that the whole situation was messy, that she needed to stay neutral and uninvolved. Could she do that, when she felt in her heart that Nick deserved better?
