Chapter 49

She could feel a presence come up to the window and she slid it open, her eyes still focused on the screen. "Just one moment please." She quickly finished up and looked up. "Vanessa! What are you doing here?"

"Can you come out here for just a second please?"

Uh-oh, this didn't sound good. "Uh, sure. Kris!"

Kris poked her head out. "Sup?"

"Can you just watch the desk for a second, I need to talk to Vanessa."

"Vanessa's here?" Kris grinned, stepping out and over to the window. "Oh, hello Vanessa." She smiled.

Vanessa went pale. "H-Hi Kris."

"Cut it out!" Illana called.

Kris gave her an innocent look. "What?! I only said hi!"

Illana groaned and walked around to the other side. "So Vanessa, what's up?" Her eyes widened as she came over and hugged her fiercely. It caught her totally off guard.

"Thank you."

She looked at her. Maybe she had cracked. "For what? I didn't do anything."

"You did. Thank you for caring and for showing me that there are people who are willing to sacrifice. I hope that you'll be happy, you deserve it."

She was totally baffled.

"I'll see ya later. Call me and let me know how everything goes."

"What goes? Vanessa..."

"Bye!" She smiled, walking out the office.

Illana stood there for a few seconds and tried to make sense of what'd just happened. Slowly she made her way back inside and sat at her desk, still totally confused.

"What was that all about?" Kris asked.

"Ya know, I have absolutely no idea." Illana responded.

There was another tap on the window and she opened it. "May I help you?"

"Yes I'm looking for a...Miss...Illana Cabrini?" The man called.

"I'm Illana Cabrini. What can I do for you?"

"Sign here please."

This was just getting weirder and weirder. Quickly she signed her name and handed the pen and clipboard back to the guy.

"Here ya go." He handed her a large rose arrangement. "Have a good day." And with that he left.

"Wow! Those are beautiful!" Kris murmured, leaning into smell the heady fragrance. "See who they're from!"

Illana reached out and took the card from the flowers and opened it.

Meet me at the park at  8:00 tonight

"What park?" Kris asked.

"I dunno. I would guess Wedgewood."

"That's odd, and it's not signed huh?"

"Nope."

"Are you gonna go?"

She shrugged. "I guess so."

"Just make sure you bring your pepper spray. Never know who's out there, of course you could just bring me along to kick their ass if need be."

"Umm, I don't think I need to pull out the heavy artillery, thanks for the offer though."

"It's no problem, I'm there for ya. Well at least call me and let me know how it goes."

"You know I will."  She looked down at the card. Who could it be from?
