Contest Organization And Contest:
Equipment and Personal Gear:
1. This is a free-style compeition.  Archers will provide their own equipment.

Compound Bows: Pre-draw weight should be at least 25 pounds and not exceed 65 pounds.  Releases and sights are permitted.  Devices that hold the bow at draw are illegal (no crossbows).  Any other equipment added to the bow that malfunctions may result in faliure to complete competition.

Recurve Bows: Pre-draw weight should be at least 25 pounds and not exceed 60 pounds.  Realeases and sights permitted.  Any other equipment added to the bow that malfunctions may result in failure to complete competiton.

2.  Archers are expected to have extra arrows (about a dozen) and extra bow strings.  Archers are to use target and/or field  points.  Broadheads (hunting and judo points are not permitted. 

3.  Archers should be knowledgeable of range safety procedures and have personal safety gear, such as safety glasses, arm guards, finger tabs or shooting gloves, and clothing guards.  Long hair should be tied back, and loose clothing such as sweatshirts should not be worn.

4.  Targets and scoring partners will be assigned by the Contest Committee.  County team members should not be shooting at the same target.  The target butts, faces, and grounds are supplied by the University.  Target butts are spiral bound fiber mat with a tighter wound core section.  Shooters have experience problems with draw weights over 60 pounds and also when using carbon and other small diameter arrows.  These arrows tend to either shoot through or stick in the core section.

5.  Contestants must shoot in a safe, yet efficent manner.  Approximately 15 seconds per a shot will be allowed by the Range Officer.

6.  Bows must be stored in the conference center headquarters. 
Bows may not be taken to the dorm rooms.

Contest:

1. PSU 4-H 540: 60 arrows with 20 arrows each shot at 55, 45, and 35 yards at an 80 cm target.  Scoring of arrows based on nine points for yellow, seven points for red, five points for blue, three points for black and one point for white.  Total points possible is 540.  Witnessed "Pass-Throughs" are scored seven points.

2. A practice end may be given at the option of the Contest Chair.

Awards:

1.  The members of the high scoring  Junior and Senior teams will be awarded plaques.

2.  The high scoring individuals in each of the Junior Boy/Junior Girl and Senior Boy/Senior Girl divisions of the Compound and Recurve Contests will be awarded a plaque.

3.  The top teams and top individuals will be announced at the Recognition Assembly during the Penn State 4-H Achievement Days.

4.  Team ribbons will be awarded to a maxium of ten (10) teams in the Compound and the Recurve Contests.

5.  Merit ribbons will be awarded to all  individuals based on Junior Boy/Junior Girl and Senior Boy/Senior Girl divisions of each of the Compound and Recurve Contests participants (33 percent
blue, 33 percent red, 33 percent white).
