| Between the lines BRANDON B. BAZEMORE SYNOPSIS: A young college student/poet, Marques, is known for his charming love poems. He has his eyes set on a female college student by the name of Essence. Marques quickly fall for Essence but he’s too shy to approach her.For advice and assistance, Marques turns to his three male friends, Julius(Juelz), Keyshawn, and Tariq. Marques’ fiends are the bad guys to go to for advice on talking to women because they are very ignorant womanizers. Juelz, Keyshawn, and Tariq all teach Marques how they approach women but it turns Marques into a fool. In the end, Marques realizes that he must be himself in order to impress Essence and he does it through his poetry. SCENE Overview: 1: The film begins by showing two different scenes of the main character, Marques on two different settings. The first scene shows Marques at a poetry reading. He is reciting a poem he wrote. The poem expresses about his love for young black women. While he’s reciting the poem, it goes to another scene of Marques a couple of days later. It shows Marques sitting on a bench; writing poetry on a sunny day at the campus yard of UMES. While he’s writing, Marques observe several young female students walking by. As the first scene continues, Marques’ poem draws the attention to several females in the audience. When he finishes, Marques was applauded by the audience especially the females. As the scene of Marques in the poetry ending ends, the film goes back to the scene of him on the bench; still writing poetry. While he’s writing, Marques noticed the presence of Essence. Essence leaves from the library. She notices Marques staring at her. They both share eye contact and smiled at one another. Essence was about to walk to Marques until she is interrupted by her friend, Latoya. Latoya talks with Essence and walked the opposite direction. As for Marques, he is still mesmerized by Essence’s beauty. He stops writing and leaves from the bench. 2. In the Student Services Center, one of Marques’ friends, Julius (“Juelz”) is spitting his game to this pretty female student. Keyshawn and Tariq observes as “Juelz” ask the pretty female student for her room extension. After “Juelz” wrote down her extension, the female student leaves. As Juelz walks back to where Keyshawn and Tariq are standing, another female student comes to Juelz and flirts with him. She gives Juelz a kiss in the cheek and leaves. Juelz walks towards Keyshawn and Tariq and brags about how he is going to see two females in one night. Juelz also brags about how his game is so perfect. Keyshawn agrees to everything Juelz says. Marques come by and exchange handshakes with Juelz, Keyshawn, and Tariq. Marques tells them that he wrote a poem until Tariq interrupts him when he noticed a group of pretty young females walking by. Juelz tells Keyshawn, Marques, and Tariq to get ready to rate them as the girls come to their direction. As the girls walked pass, Juelz puts out both hands up and gives them a “10”. Keyshawn looks at Juelz’s rating and also gives them a “10”. Marques give them a “9” while Tariq gives them a “5”! Tariq mentions some ignorant comments about the females. As Juelz and Keyshawn arques with Tariq about his comments, Marques noticed the presence of Essence again. She walks with Latoya as they walk the opposite direction from Marques and his friends. Marques stares at her as Juelz, Keyshawn and Tariq noticed Marques’ attraction to Essence. They pressure Marques on trying to talk to Essence. Marques starts to act very shy! Keyshawn tells Marques that he will approach Essence and try to play matchmaker. Marques refuses on Keyshawn’s offer but Keyshawn does it anyway. Keyshawn meets up with Essence and Latoya and stops them during the hallway. As Keyshawn tries to talk to Essence, he is interrupted by Latoya. Latoya is jealous that boys would talk to Essence instead of her because Essence is very pretty and friendly. Latoya forces Keyshawn by not alking to Essence. Tariq comes by and noticed that Keyshawn is being taking advantaged by Latoya. Tariq helps Keyshawn by saying some ignorant disses at Latoya. Then, Latoya and Tariq exchange verbal disses at each other. Then, Juelz comes by and breaks it up. Latoya has a crush on Juelz. Juelz would smooth-talked his way to end the altercation and let everyone go their separate directions. Juelz tells Marques that he, Keyshawn, and Tariq will teach him how to approach to Essence. 3. The next scene shows Marques observing to Juelz, Keyshawn, and Tariq as they perform their approach on talking to females. Marques would notice that Juelz is very smooth with his approach but he’s a 100% womanizer. Marques noticed that Keyshawn is a follower. He copies Juelz’s approach but he does it in a wrong and dumb way. As for Tariq, Marques notices that he would do some ignorant things to get females like smacking them in their behinds. Later that night, Juelz, Keyshawn and Tariq shows Marques what he should do and say when he sees Essence again. They would practice with Marques until he’ll get it right. 4. The next day, Marques is walking outside around the campus and sees Khalil. Khalil organizes the poetry readings on campus. He gives Marques a flyer of the next poetry reading. Khalil urges Marques to come out and recite another poem. Marques tells him that he’s not sure if he will come because he is busy with schoolwork. Khalil tells Marques that he should think about it because the audience loved his last poem Marques recited. Marques told him he’ll think about it and walked away. To be continued………. |
