9~1~02: Kat: heres the interview with  ben from the band bullet proof human from philly. it's some exciting stuff- read on.
1. K:first of all, how did you guys get started?
B:me and jin have been friends since 5th grade, so eventually in 9th grade we decided to start a band.  i took up the bass, and jin was already playing guitar.  we wrote songs for a year or so (just the 2 of us...not to be like that crappy will smith song).  we went from drummer to drummer until we heard about this good metal drummer.  we jammed with him, decided to keep him (or he decided to keep us), and thought we needed a fuller sound, so i contacted dennis who plays guitar and that was the end of our getting together phase.

2. K:do you plan on pursuing this out of high school, or do you guys have other plans?
B: right now we're just trying to get our band off the ground.  we're all going to college, but we plan on getting together on breaks and after college to keep the band going.

3. K: has anything crazy happened at any of your concerts-(things
lighting on fire, crazed groupies, mass hysteria, etc)?
B: yes, actually our first concert was a fundraiser for st. asaph's church, and everything was cool until the first time i stepped up to the mic.  because of  faulty wiring in the church electricity leaked into my amp.  my amp was connected to my bass, my fingers were on the metal strings, and my lips were touching the mic.  you can imagine how the next half hour of my life went.

4. K: so, how are all you guys doing with the female species?
B:  i can't speak for the others in the band, so i'll just say i'm looking right now.

5. K:do you think girls should be in punk bands? (being a chick myself, i just had to ask.)
B: Definately.  As long as the girls can write their own music, rather than being a souless puppet for pepsi (not to name names).  also punk girls are really hot (usually).

6. K: how is the punk scene doing in philadelphia?
B: as for fans of punk rock, we're great.  in my hs there are a ton of pennywise/nofx/etc fans, but
as far as the bands go, philly has way too many cover bands and not enough original punk bands.

7. K: do you guys have any pre-concert rituals (ie candle burning, seances, orgys etc)?
B: in our past shows (not that many) we have a huddle right before where we cover last minute reminders, and give pep talks.

8. K:what do you all do for fun when not making punk rock music?
B: not all of our music is punk rock, but when not making our music we work to make money for equipment, i produce the actual cds, and there's nothing much else to do in our area other than sit around at the local wawa.

9. K: which bands suck, and why do you think so?
B: the brakes, and any band that doesn't write their own material.  i don't like the brakes because they're a bunch of retro preppie wannabies that have a hippie following that obsesses over phish.

10. K: lastly- keep in mind this one might be difficult- how many balloons are there in the song 99 Red Balloons?
B: um...is red a number?  i say there are 99 red balloons.
