| I am currently volunteering with Starfish Greatheart's Foundation and helping to raise funds to support orphans and children made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS in South Africa. Current estimations indicate that more than 700,000 children in South Africa under the age of 18 have lost one or both parents due to the pandemic. The need for support is so terribly critical because even as you read this more children are being orphaned. Frightening statistics show that by 2010, the epidemic will kill as many as 7 million people, leaving 2.3 million orphans in its wake. The sooner we can reach these children, the sooner we can teach them how to protect themselves against the very disease that has ravaged their world and threatens their future survival. What really made me interested in getting involved was that Starfish does not claim to be able to eradicate the problem, but is turning the tide on AIDS one child at a time.
