Part I
Hail to all our fans and thanks for showing and interest in Veneficus!
Let me start this story by introducting the characters. First there is Fenrir, or Brian if you will, the music writer of Veneficus.
And then I, Kernous or Jamin, the lyricist. Having both grown up listening to metal bands like Morbid Angel, Death, Carcass, etc. we have aspired from a young age to become musicians of that calibur. As we aged, our skills did improve considerably thanks to sheer determination and devotion to the music. Without that, my friends, the world would be full of horrendously pitiful musicians that clog up the mainsteam music industry daily, so i praise those who follow that same path. Do not take me wrong with that comment, but obviously a lot of mainsteam bands are crap. But i digress...
We originally started this band under the name "Icewind" and released a demo in which we both wrote the music and lyrics. However after much consideration of projects i wanted to do, i left the band to Fenrir to do what he wanted and shape it himself. After writing for sometime he decided i would be added as the lyricist and vocalist of his newly formed band. We disscussed what this band would be about and I threw at him an idea I've had for a while about a fantasy story I wanted to write and put into music. He agreed that it was a good idea, so i began writing the lyrics and he continued the music.
The name of the band, "Veneficus", comes from the man "Livius", one of the central characters in the story. He aspires through Dark Magic to become ruler of fantasy ancient Rome. In Latin, Veneficus means "sorceror". All my lyrics for this band will continue in this story of fantasy in historical settings.
I took this route mainly because I tire of the amount of metal bands that ramble about their contempt of Christianity, or thier allegiance to the other half of that bigotry, Satanism. While I am 100% behind the eradication of hate-filled monotheistic bullshit, I will not associate myself with any equally rediculous alter ego for it. And for all those who would tell me that daemons are in association with this mess, I assure you that their existence predates that of any Christian religion.
On the music, Fenrir writes a hybrid of Black/Death in the vein of such greats like Dissection and Dimmu Borgir. . I cannot speak for his inspriation, but I believe it has something to do with the latter mentioned devotion and determination. He develops most of his ideas through guitars, so you can hear a constant feel of guitar driven music in Veneficus. In our writing process, the music is written first, then the lyrics are added, and a structure is formed. Needless to say, with writing the majority of the music, he is the lead of the band; hardest at work.
Our first release was a demo plainly titled "Veneficus", which was released to a small number of people and put on mp3.com to attract future fans. The sound quality was definately bad, given the means of recording it, but it served the purpose it was intended for. The future of Veneficus looks secure as time passes. At this point in time we are developing our first release, which will be distributed through Dark Forest Productions. We look forward to releasing this album to the public and joining the metal ranks! We also hope to add musicians as we grow and play live shows, so look to us in times ahead as well...
