First, I should warn you that this guide will not cover every boss in the game. I would like that, of course, but I only have so much time to devote to anything. So instead, I am providing information for the major bosses in the game. Most of the others are easy, anyway. The bosses below generally require more than just high levels to defeat, however, which is why I'm explaining how to conquer them.
| The Weapons |
There are four 'Weapon' monsters in the world, and none of them are easy to conquer. People regularly argue that two of them are even harder to defeat than the game's ultimate boss, and I have to agree. So here are the strategies and information for each of them. Try and defeat them in the order shown below:
1. Diamond Weapon
2. Ultimate Weapon
3. Emerald Weapon
4. Diamond Weapon
The reason to do this is that if you try any other order, you won't really be prepared to fight the last two. Beating all four of the weapons is really a game all in itself, and one you truly need preparation to play.
Diamond Weapon
This guy has 45,000 HP, which is more than just about any other enemy you'll encounter in the game, the other Weapons and Sephiroth excepted.
When you first fight him, you should instantly beef up your party as much as possible. Throw up some walls around them, make sure they move faster... it's nothing you wouldn't do anyway, but now the steps are infinitely more critical.
Keep your head on straight, hit him with every powerful summoning spell you've got, and you'll probably be able to beat him.
Ultimate Weapon
This one flies off after you do a certain amount of damage to him, and you have to find him again in order to fight. Keep finding him and beating him, and you'll eventually win the Ultima Weapon, something you'll need to defeat the remaining two Weapons.
First, though, I should tell you how to beat this guy. The best tactic, of course, is to use your most powerful summoning spells. I believe Neo Bahamut is enough to make him rethink his line of action, but it may not be. Knights of the Round would obviously work, if you have it at this point.
During the encounter, one of your group members is probably going to be killed. Make sure you revive him before picking another fight with Ultimate Weapon. Also, make sure that you finish this off so you can get that sword for Cloud!
Now that you have the sword, it's time to do a little preparing before facing the other two Weapons, who are much, much, much harder than any enemy I've previously faced in an RPG (and I've played a fair number of them). Take the following steps:
1. Head to the Golden Saucer. There, you must have the Omnislash and W-Weapon Materia. With those, talk to the lady to start a series of seven battles (first make sure Cloud has equipped Ultima Weapon). Compete until you defeat an opponent who is basically a different version of yourself. When you win, you will receive the Final Attack Materia.
2. Next you must morph a guide book from the underwater reactor, which is located on the ocean bottom somewhere near Junon. Take the morphed item to the Kalm Traveller in Kalm. He'll give you the Underwater Materia. Equip it and you're ready to face Emerald Weapon (this is assuming you are at historically high levels and that you have equipped just about every worthwhile weapon and materia in the game, and also that you have the Knights of the Round materia in your possession, raised to a high level).
Emerald Weapon
Believe it or not, this guy has around 2 million health power! That makes for a long fight. With the Underwater Materia, it won't end early unless you are defeated (before, there was a 20-minute time limit).
In your group, you'll want to have members that can do a lot of damage to this guy, as he can dish out a lot of punishment. You also want to use some fairly sneaky techniques to get in extra damage.
The first useful trick is to cast Knights of the Round in such a way that it will be cast twice for one use. Immediately have your other characters mime it so that you get more uses out of the one use. This will help you whack off a fair bit of the enemy's health. You still have a long way to go, though.
Once you've done that, keep hammering away with all the summoning spells you can manage. You also want to use defensive magic, such as Big Guard and Regen, so that attacks will hurt you less and you'll have more of a chance to recover.
Another cool technique is to have the Final Attack Materia equipped, linked to the Phoenix Materia. This way, you will automatically bring the whole group back to life if you are killed. This is only assuming you have enough MP to do so, and of course that means you should conserve Cloud's magic and focus mostly on attacking with his weapons and limit breaks.
Whatever you do, don't let the baby weapons live long. When they appear, their proud papa can do a lot more damage (not to mention the fact that the little ones aren't too shabby, either). Take them out so the big guy is weaker. And keep hammering away at him. This fight is going to take a while. You really want to have mastered most of your materia, and you want your levels to be as close to 100 as possible.
Ruby Weapon
This guy has less health power than his underwater brother (a little over 1 million), but he's equally tough. Before you encounter him, kill everyone but Cloud (yes, you read right). This is because Ruby Weapon is much tougher to face when your two companions are alive.
For this encounter, you should link the Final Attack Materia to the materia that casts Life 2. If you link it to the Phoenix summoning one, it will revive all party members, and that will only serve to make the battle tougher.
Also, Cloud should be wearing the Mystile armor, which evades magic attacks a large percentage of the time (and the Ruby Weapon will certainly be using magic against you). Early in the fight, you should cast Knights of the Round, Big Guard, and Haste. Also, it wouldn't hurt to cast Regen. You'll need all the help you can get. You should also have a ribbon equipped, or you'll have status ailments inflicted on you by one of his attacks (which of course makes it impossible to win).
This is really the hardest battle in the game. All you can do is defend yourself the best you know how, doing what I've described above. Then, when you can sneak it in, throw some summoning magic attacks his way. Knights of the Round works best, but the Bahamut ones are good, as well. Keep working and you might actually win.
| Sephiroth |
Yes, the game's boss. Before you can fight him, you must work your way through some others. But if you have Knights of the ROund, they will die within one round, making them so simple to fight that the only focus is Sephiroth.
In this case, you have to work a little more quickly. If you've already defeated all the weapons by now, you'll have no trouble here. If, on the other hand, you've been struggling through every single encounter all the way through, you're going to be taxed by this last battle.
First, I think it's important to say that you really ought to have the Knights of the Round spell. Without it, the battle will drag on until Sephiroth eventually kills you. Nothing really does enough damage to slow him down.
In addition, you should have the Mime spell. What this means is that you can cast Knights of the Round once or twice, and that your companion will mimic it, which gets in at least half as much again the damage, absolutely free.
If you don't cast the spell, Sephiroth is going to cast one of his favorites. As you spend nearly a minute and a half watching his spell in action, you realize it's going to hurt- and it does. In fact, all of your characters will lose all but 1 of their HP. At this point, Sephiroth will soon cast another spell that isn't particularly strong. However, it will be enough to wipe out your weakened party.
If you have it, of course, you should equip the Final Attack Materia. But even without that, you can win if you use Knights of the Round.
Sephiroth has, I would estimate, about 150,000 HP. You'll probably face no more than three rounds before you either win or lose. Again (I can't stress it enough), Knights of the Round is the only option for anything but the best of players, regardless of how high your levels may be. Defeat the guy and see the 10-minute ending!
