Food idiosyncrasies are defined as an abnormal response to a food substance or additive. The reactions generally do not involve the immune system and they are often seen in people who are genetically predisposed.
Examples of food idiosyncrasies:
Lactose Intolerance - abdominal pain, bloating and diarrhea.
Fructose Containing Foods - abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).
Choline and Carnitine Containing Foods - fishy odor of body secretions.
Red Wine - sneezing, headache, diarrhea, itchy skin, shortness of breath.
Asparagus - sulfur smelling urine.
Beets - red urine.
Chocolate - migrane headaches.
Fava Beans - hemolysis (breakage of red blood cells), fatigue, nausea, fever, chills, abdominal pain, and shortness of breath.
