Project 1: Digitalis

a. List the structural components of digitalis glycosides;

b. Describe the direct and indirect effects of digoxin on the: ATRIA, AV NODE and VENTRICLES;

c. Compare and contrast pharmacokinetics of digoxin (Lanoxin) and digitoxin (crystodigin);

d. List the advantages/disadvantages of using digoxin in congestive heart failure.

Project 2: Heart, blood  and blood vessels

a. Describe the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system;

b. Define preload and afterload;

c. List advantages/disadvantages of heparin versus coumarin        anticoagulants (including mechanisms of action).

d. What are the differences in electrophysiologic effects of          procaineamide and quinidine?

Project 3:  Antihyperlipidemic Drugs

a. Describe functions of all lipoproteins;

b. Compare effects of:
     beta blockers,
     diuretics,
     cholestyramine (Colestid)
     clofibrate (Atromid-S)
     lovastatin (Mevacor)
     niacin
     on cholesterol, triglycerides, VLDL, HDL, LDL;

c.  Name 5 major concerns for the administration of             antihyperlipidemic drugs to GERIATRIC patients.

Each project is worth 10% of your final grade.
Project 1: Due October 18, 2000
Project 2: Due November 1, 2000
Project 3: Due December 6, 2000

I expect neat presentations. You may  use sources other than your textbook to answer these questions - if you do - list them with your answers.

Any project turned in late or suffering from sloppiness syndrome will be penalized one full grade.

Conversely, any project turned in early and neat will be awarded bonus points.
