Scotland, Glasgow; Bible John

On February 22, 1968, Patricia Docker was enjoying an evening out at the Barrowland Ballroom in Glasgow, Scotland. She was found the next morning strangled to death and lying in a doorway nearby. Leads were scarce and the public had largely forgotten about Docker's murder until a repeat killing on August 16, 1969. Jemima McDonald was found the next day in an abandoned building strangled with her own stockings. Like Docker, McDonald had been at the Barrlowland Ballroom the previous night. Witnesses claimed to have seen her leaving about midnight with a man described as slim, with red hair, standing about 6'2", and between 25 and 35 years of age.

On October 30 a third girl ended up dead. Twenty-nine-year-old Helen Puttock and a friend had paired up with two men named John at the Barrowland the night before. Puttock's friend thought Puttock's date had stated his last name at some point, which she fuzzily recalled as Templeton or Emerson. Most likely it was fictitious anyway. She also described the man as polite, considerate, and well dressed, with short hair. After the two couples left the ballroom (The other John left seperately and was never located) the man named John made some strange remarks and began making some Biblical references but Puttock's girlfriend felt comfortable leaving her alone with John when she hopped off the bus the three were taking home. A few stops later the bus dropped off Puttock and her new friend. Her body was found there the next day.

Now Glasgow had a name to go with their Serial Killer, "Bible John", but after Puttock's killing the strangler never surfaced again. Police still hunt the murderer of the three young women, but to no avail. In fact, a new possible suspect emerged in late 2000 but no arrest seems imminent. In all likelihood Bible John will remain a mystery forever.
