There has been a big change in line up since the last recordings. Suckle now has only one permanent member and that is me.
What have you been up to since the tour with Teenage Fanclub because you've been very quiet?
Yes, with the previous line-up we recorded four songs to be included in our second album, then I took a few months off to have a baby.
Since Nirvana so publicly endorsed the Vaselines, your cult status has continued to grow. Did this influence your decision to return with the label (left hand recordings) and Suckle?
I returned with another band before Suckle called Painkillers. I suppose I was a bit surprised about the Nirvana thing. I guess it gave me some confidence to try again with music. I hate the music business, it sucks, but I like making music, and i'm glad that a few more people have listened to it and maybe enjoyed it and maybe slagged it off. This is the nature of beast.
You were with Chemikal Underground, do you continue to run your label?
Not running Left Hand as I've had no time and no longer signed to Chemikal Underground.
Who would you fire a verbal rocket at?
All the fuckers who piss me off.
I am always a fan of people doing their own thing and finding out what lies beneath the surface and not just waiting for ridiculous magazines like the NME to tell you what you should like. Fanzines have their own voice, this is important. I hope fanzines support me and thank you for your support.
What have been your favourites albums of this year so far?
St. Thomas' 'I'm Coming Home' has been on my CD for a while, so has Jeffrey Lewis' 'The last time I did acid I went insane'. I saw him supporting Cornershop. He had an innocent stage presence. I think I am old enough to be his mother.
What is next in the pipeline for you?
I have been recording some tracks on my own with the help of guest musicians playing piano and cello and the odd bit of percussion. The next step is to find out if any record label will be interested in hearing it. It is very mellow, some would say depressing but i would say melancholic. Hopefully you will hear it one day.
