Well, by Electronic I’m going to assume your referring to a genre of music that to be quite honest I’m not to familiar with. Some of the more modern acts that I enjoy that could be classified "electronic" are: Squarepusher, Autechre, Russel Haswell. But really Im not very inspired in the music I create in sunn0))) by those I just mentioned.
What was the best show you played last year, what factors made it so good?
I think one of the shows on the last UK tour, maybe the Scala show in London. Getting to share the stage with Whitehouse, and then performing with Attila Csihar, PITA, Holy Mcgrail and of course my brothers in sunn0))). The vibe of the show was right and I thought the sound and performance was "on" that night.
How did Julian Cope become involved with the WHITE1 LP?
Julian had expressed his appreciation and support for sunn0))) though his website: Head Heritage. I contacted him to send him our current release at the time: "Flight of the Behemoth" and this sparked a relationship between Julian and sunn0))). We then asked him if he would be intersted in collaborating with us on a future recording and he agreed. We sent him a rough track titled: "My Wall" ( a reference to Black Flag and Pink Floyd) and he sent us back his amazing vocal addition.
As I've yet to see you I find it hard to imagine you in concert, how does Sunn0))) work live? How does it differ to Sunn0))) in the studio?
As with our recording situation, we try to bring different collaborators into the fold. Live performances are built around MAXIMUM VOLUME, so we try and get ahold of as many cabinets and sunn amplifiers as possible. We usually have skeletons of ideas for what "material" we will perform, or what "direction" we want the sounds to go. However we try to leave it somewhat open ended so that the sounds were making may go into uncharted territory.
Personally I’m into High On Fires' live performances. Recordings I've been into are: Xasthurs' works.
How did you get to land Probot on your label and has it been Southern Lords biggest seller to date?
I met Dave Grohl at a Melvins show in 1990. We hit it off talking about a mutual fondness for heavy music (Trouble, Candlemass, Melvins etc). Our paths have crossed over the last 15 years via mutual friends. Dave called me up a few years back and asked if Id be interested in releasing his Probot album on the label. As a huge fan of his drumming, and the musicians he chose to collaborate on the album, I jumped at the chance.
Since the initial interview (you'd just played The Scala in London) you are now playing illustrious venues such as Queen Elizabeth Hall and The Forum, has this taken you by surprise?
Its always a pleasure and honour to play venues that have a legendary history and are not your typical "rock club". These venues are actually the type of places we prefer to play and seem more appropriate with not only the visual aspect of our show but often times the audio as well.
If you could have released ANY record from any period in time on SL what would it be?
Hmmm...maybe:
