Thorens TD160 Super with Mayware Formula IV |
I've only put up a couple of photos of this 'table as it's pretty much in 'stock' condition. The Mayware Formula IV tonearm is a seriously under-rated piece of kit. It's only just beginning to be taken seriously by audiophiles some twenty years after its production. Though not expensive it can be tricky to find. The Roksan Nima is very similar in construction and represents an alternative... |

One of very few changes I've made was to replace the platter mat with one I cut from cork sheet. On the left of this photo is the Pro-ject Speedbox SE which I use with this deck. A very worthwhile upgrade. |

This is it - the Mayware Formula IV. I ditched the old (knackered) Audio Technica MM that was supplied in favour of an Ortofon MC15 Super II. It has high enough compliance to work with even this lightweight arm. |

I'm itching to get this deck through a service. I know the arm needs a re-wire and an oil-change would be a good idea. Other changes are optional - springs, feet, platter damping etc. etc. So far the only treatment it's had was an experimental polish of the platter. I used a wire brush to shine it up followed by Brasso (used vigorously) then a quick wash in meths. to remove any traces of oxide or polish. Finally a thin floorwax (Johnson's Kleer) was used to reduce further oxidation. It's worked fine and the platter's edge is still shiny over a year later. |
