Cape Hatteras, North Carolina is the location of my favorite vacation spot. (Okay, only been there once, but what a week!) I REALLY want a house here when I collect enough money and status and insurance. Who cares about shifting sands and tropical storms (romantic!) when you've got treacherous pirates, wild horses, pioneer aviators, vanishing colonies, and flawless sea shells?

• Misty of Chincoteague, the first in a series of books by Marguerite Henry on the wild horses of the so-called "Outer Banks" (although Chincoteague is located off the coast of Maryland/Virginia, apparently). I grew up on these books and anyone who hasn't been is exposed to them is truly missing out on (Newberry Honor) classics.
