Group Title: Z. Family in Part

Group Type: Family

The Family Group is a group which provides continuous emotional input, positive or negative, to your life. The role of the family is to serve our need for emotional involvement. This group may not be of one's blood family; it can be a chosen "family", in which the bonds are formed out of the members' need for emotional interaction. Whether of blood or choice, these family-bonds cannot be broken by the strong emotions of anger or love, but will only disintegrate in an atmosphere of apathy, coldness or absence of emotion. The people with whom you cry and laugh, who know you for what you are, faults and all, are your family. This group is different from your Hunting groups, in that the Family Group will not reject you for your failures; and it is different from Gathering Groups, because it will tolerate strong antisocial attitudes in its members.

Introduction

Probably the single most important ingredient in the success of the human race is our ability to work in groups. This ability is part of our evolution for, by forming family groups we managed to evolve and become the dominate species on this small planet. So deeply embedded in our chromosomes is this group-forming reflex that it has become the unconsciously-assumed base of human life.  However, we are not a herding animal. We prefer not to relinquish our individuality when we socialise, and because of this need to feel personally unique and different from others, while pursuing with them common goals, understanding and feeling comfortable within our groupings is paramount. In sum, we form groups of individuals who cooperate together.  We form tribes.

Within a tribe there will be sub-groups, each group serving some purpose in the individual survival of all members of the tribe, for what is good for all the individuals will be good for the tribe. Although human cultures are these days more sophisticated, and most of us consider ourselves to be civilised in ways inconceivable to our cave-dwelling ancestors, those early instincts are still with us and are reflected in both our deep need to function in groups, and in the very nature of the groups that we form. Working astrologically with groups, therefore, requires firstly an understanding of the nature of the group under consideration, and secondly, a sensitivity of judgement about whether the resulting astrology reflects the inherent (unconscious) intent, and supports the activity, of that group.

Each person will bring their birth-chart to the group, and each birth-chart consists of planets, luminaries, angles and midpoints. A single birth-chart can have up to 100 points that it can contribute to the group. So, in a group of, say, six people, there will be about 600 points in all. From that potent mix of midpoints and planets, patterns will form and solidify, like crystals in a super-saturated solution. When a pattern is formed it becomes a dominant theme in the group. If the group activity is consonant with this pattern, then all is well.  However, if the group objectives are not supported by such a pattern, then the group will develop internal conflicts, which will probably result in the group's dissolution.  Thus the potential of a group to fulfil its purpose is governed by the astrological patterns formed by that group. If the pattern supports the type of group formed, then all will be well. If, however, the pattern is contrary to the group's purposes, the group will be ostensibly one type of group, but internally driven to try to function as a quite different type of group. A Family, for example, trying to perform as a Tribal Elder Group; or a sports team (Hunting Group) turning into a Play/Peer Group.

So groups are very risky business, yet we are born into them, live in them, work in them and socialise in them.  If they go wrong, they can cause us major personal problems, bring us anger and frustration, and cause job or career loss. And, in the final analysis, a wrongly-functioning group can even cause wars. Conversely, a well-functioning group can smooth and enrich the lives of all the individuals served by it.

The following report is an analysis of the particular patterns that are within the group being investigated.

Strongest Sign

Virgo: Virgo is the sign that is emphasised by the zodiac position of the combined natal planets, points, and midpoints of all the people in this family.

MOTTO: "Veritas vinicit" - "Truth conquers."  The Keith family Heraldic motto.

The members of this Virgo family grow up with a focus on correct procedure, which will entail, whatever else, a respect for the precision of language, both oral and written.  It may also tacitly encourage something of a critical and judgemental attitude towards those with lesser standards. They are taught, as lessons or by example, that the path to joy is that of exactness, perfection, accuracy and correctness - and any criticism of one member of this family by another is driven by a well-intentioned conviction that they are helping a loved one stay on this "right" path. It is even possible that they are learning how to be a family, working hard on getting it right.

There is an ancient book that is at the heart of the Virgo family.  It is known today as the Egyptian Book of the Dead, and details the correct way to live in order to achieve immortality.  This book instructed the citizens of Egypt to spend their lives preparing for the after-life - by learning and memorising this Book of the Dead, which contained the correct procedures for the attainment of eternal life. The correct chants, the correct bread, the correct wine and beer, the correct direction in which the correct chants were to be performed by the departing soul. For after death the person's soul was believed to enter the Hall of Double Justice. This was an examination room which contained two chambers. The first chamber held forty two judges, each carrying a sharp sword, who examined particular aspects of the person's conscience. If the person mispronounced just one of these judges' names, or failed to be able to name them all correctly, or was found wanting in the way that they had lived their life, then any one of the forty two judges could cut the soul in two and deny it eternal life.

Only after successfully passing these Judges, could the soul move into the second chamber.  Here waited Osiris, who was the "good one" waiting for his earthly children to arrive, Maat, a goddess against whom the person's heart was weighed, and beside her, ready to devour the hearts of the guilty, was Amemait, the Devourer. Over all this resided Toth the Moon god, the keeper of all records. He is the ultimate judge. Toth was possessed of complete knowledge and wisdom. He invented all the arts and sciences: arithmetic, surveying, geometry, astronomy, magic, medicine, surgery, music, drawing, and, most importantly, writing - so that all his wisdom would not be lost. He was the Lord of the Holy Words, The Keeper of the Divine Archives, and Patron of History.  If the person's heart weighed in at exactly the same weight as Maat, and Toth noted that there were no evil deeds written in the book of their life, then and only then could the person enter into eternal life, which would be spent in service to the gods.

So the Book of the Dead was the formula, containing precisely detailed prescriptions, for how one could pass the Judgement awaiting after death. There were no printing presses, so each copy of the book had to be written by hand, either on the walls of tombs, or on papyrus scrolls. If there were any mistakes in the copy from which any person learned their lessons, and held in their hand at death, then they would probably be slain by one of the forty two judges, or eaten by the Devourer. It was important that the book was correct, and equally important that it was religiously adhered to.  It was the only path to eternal life.

The Virgo family is still deeply, if unconsciously, connected to this book.  The members of the family will have an instinctual need for correctness in all they do, as well as a constant concern with judgement: preparation of defences against possible negative criticism, giving judgement, and also a real fear of being judged.  And just as the Book of the Dead focuses on food and health, this family will also have very strong ideas about, or physiological reactions to, certain foods, and may be drawn towards medicines, herbal potions, gyms and the health profession, leading outsiders to think of them as either hypochondriacs or health and fitness fanatics.

THE CHARACTERS THAT WILL BE PRESENT IN THE FAMILY:

THE TRAVELLER, THE DECEASED: This person is fearful of judgement. They are devoted to and enthusiastic about the written, or printed, word, and tend to accept information as fact if it is written. They will be seeking perfection, for they intuitively feel that the slightest error will lead to the damnation of their soul. This character is hyper-sensitive to criticism, because if others do not support their belief in their own purity, then they feel damned.  However, this character can also be the catalyst of greater awareness in the family. So the person who embodies this character can enhance or expand the awareness of the rest of their family.

TOTH : This is the person in the family who is always correct, the holder of the law. This character can have a very negative expression, as it can set itself up as the ultimate arbiter of the law, and act as unilateral judge and jury. Righteous, with a one-eyed faith in what is thought to be correct, this family member can manifest utter outrage that another member could dare to go against the family law, or imply that they, Toth, are incorrect in any way.  In a more positive expression, the Toth family member, while always characteristically righteous, can also be kindly disposed and receptive, listening to all sides before passing judgement.

MAAT: This person is a softer version of Toth.  She, also, is Truth and Right, but she steps onto the scales; she is willing to see if a balance can be found. This family member is the negotiator, or the arbitrator.

OSIRIS: The all-knowing member of the family, who seems to be above the struggle, or to have little involvement with the worries of the rest of the members. Concerned but aloof, this character is non-judgemental, and simply represents the joy of getting everything correct.  This is the family member who has achieved success.

AMEMAIT, THE DEVOURER: This is the fear of what would happen if life is not lived properly, or according to the family's idea of what is correct. Amemait can take the form of illness, or anxiety, either being capable of devouring a person. This is the family monster, the family fear.

THE JOURNEY:  The family is born and lives in a field of worry and anxiety. They will worry about getting something wrong, be constantly engaged in preparing what they will say to critical superiors, and will be in a state of constant research - of books, newspapers, media reports - seeking answers that they can have in store when the challenges come. At times health and diet issues will come to the fore, and they may find themselves involved with maintaining the health of one or more of their members.  Periodically, different family members will find themselves protesting their innocence, or championing some cause, and in both activities feeling that they are the upholder of some virtually divine law. The family can become trapped in an ever-tightening web of worry, as they build a history of instances in which one or other member becomes angry at someone "getting it wrong". Years of this kind of frustration can result in an atmosphere of family tension such that one or another member can be expected to fly into a rage if they feel that something is misquoted from a book, or some divinely-held law of correctness is minimally flouted. Somewhere along the journey of this family's life, some member has to realise that correctness and perfection belongs to "square dry objects", and that love, intimacy, friendship, and the joy of living is "round and wet". This means that human emotional needs and interactions have to be expected to contain doubts, uncertainties, misunderstood communications - "errors", as this family would probably call them;  and that these "incorrectnesses" will not lead the family's, or the individual members', souls to damnation, but perhaps just to less anxious individuals, and better inter-family relationships. If the family can learn this lesson, then it can mature into a family that both respects education and correctness of procedure, and links these in a humane and generous way to their physical, emotional and social well-being.

6th 30; 7th 26; 3rd 22

Strongest House
11th House: The House brought to prominence by the diurnal position of all the combined planets and midpoints in this Family is the 11th House.

With an eleventh house emphasis, this will be a large extended family, whose arms are permanently open in welcome to relatives, friends and even strangers. For, in contrast to families which have very distinct boundaries, and are quite exclusive, this family is very inclusive. Family members will be very socially active, and will regularly bring home their many friends. The family will also socialise a lot together, having large family picnics and throwing parties.  They enjoy great celebrations of life, where all the family, various friends and the celebrations are placed into the one large melting pot.  For this family loves life, loves to celebrate it in all its variety of occasion - birthdays, the successes of individuals, and even funerals. Members of this family will grow up with highly cultivated social skills, and the only shortcoming to watch for is that the family may be so busy socialising, and forming alliances and networks, that the private lives of the individual members could be sacrificed.  Such an extroverted family may tend to avoid the more emotional or intense issues that naturally arise in any family's life, considering them detrimental to their friendships or enjoyment of life. As a result, they can emotionally marginalise some members, or indeed some areas of their own lives. Nevertheless, as long as the family can ensure that each member also gets enough personal space, and quality time in the family, then the sense of camaraderie and sociability that this family generates can create a very happy base, from which all members can go out into the world of work, and return to be refreshed.

Each Person's Role in the Group

Each person in the group, via their birth-chart will contribute a planet or point. Or, we can think of it as each group will form a connection to the individuals within the group via a particular planet or point in each person's birth-chart.   By being aware of what the group is asking from, and possibly also provoking in the individual, then that person's role in the group can be more completely understood. Thus the group asks the person to show a particular side of their personality; a particular part of their chart,  if this is comfortable for that person, then all is well, but if it is not, then the result will be stress and tension - for that person and for the group.

Role Pattern 1

Number of Charts: 6;  Number of Hits: 13
Pattern Harmonic: 7th;  Vacant Points: 0
The seventh harmonic is one of passion and obsession and, as Michael Harding says in the book Working with Astrology (Arkana 1990, page 225), the seventh harmonic "has the potential to both inspire and ensnare". A group combined by this pattern will have an emotional intensity, a slight touch of neurosis, or will hover on the edge of obsession, and from this precarious position they will gain inspiration. If this is a family, the members of this group will be interwoven in a web full of power-plays, and held together by a psychic and spiritual links, and they will both love and hate each other in the same breath. In any other type of group, if they can hang in there long enough together as a team, they can experience a virtually divine inspiration, but the day to day business of the group may prove to be difficult. Passionate and highly creative, but never emotionally stable.

Pluto is contributed by:

3. Jennifer Z-W at 26°Vi20' (Orb 1°18')

The Pluto-person who holds a great deal of power in the family either overtly or covertly. For this power is in the authority that they hold or their ability to draw the group's focus and be the centre of attention. If they are an empowered person they willingly handle the crises, be prepared to break down structures which may be restricting the family, physically, emotional or spiritually, and at the same time be fiercely loyal to the family. If, however, they are the one which is standing in a shadows, the one who brings tragedy and crisis to the family, then what they contribute to the family is a continuing palate of traumatic change. Therefore, it is important that the family encourage the Pluto-person to be empowered and be allowed to hold a vision of the big picture, and be attended to when they talk of sweeping changes that could be needed. For if this person feels they have a voice, then there will be no need for them to seek attention via crisis, and the family will gain the insight of a visionary person.

Venus is contributed by:

1. Ethel Z at 17°Sc50' (Orb 1°14')

The Venus-person in the family is very concerned with the relationships between the members; for these can be are valued above all else and for that reason they will discourage conflict, and disagreement preferring to comprise or allow a more aggressive member get their way. The difficulty is that the denying of conflict for the sake of calmness may in turn lead to explosive situations, for it is better to have small pressure releases in a family then major eruptions. The other side of coin is that the Venus-person may be the member who is out of step with the rest of the family, emphasising the need for Venus by displaying a lack of these skills. This person may also be the artist, or the artisan adding to the family's awareness of art, colour, music, theatre and also gentle living.  Or the Venus-person may also give the family a taste of luxury or sensuality and be the member that earns the money.  Whatever the expression the Venus-person can bring calmness to troubled situations, and will make the best mediator within the family or, as a result of their actions, they teach the family the need to have a way of calming troubled waters.

Jupiter is contributed by:

4. Donald Z-W at 06°Le05' (Orb 0°08')

Jupiter is the traveller as well as the monk, the philosopher and teacher, the sports-person as well as the party-goer and joker. The Jupiter-person brings these gifts to the family and uses them to expand the family's world. In addition they may be strongly influenced by their grand-father, and may even bear his name and in that sense the person can also carries the history of the family, its myths, its tribal and ethic origins. But this Jupiter-person can also carry this history as a wound or a mark, or some feature emotionally or physically which is a burden that they carry, and in this situation they are carrying the wound for the family.  With this person subject to emotional highs and lows the family needs to recognise that this member's problems need to been embraced by all members and then the Jupiter-person can bring bounty and joy to the rest of the family.

Mercury is contributed by:

3. Jennifer Z-W at 27°Vi40' (Orb 0°01')

The Mercury-person may be the brightest, or the slowest, the thief or the guardian of  the truth. They are the one who introduces new information to the family which they may do by talking, reading, adding comments or, they force the rest of the family to explore new options because of their lack of communicating skills like hearing, seeing, or learning difficulties. The Mercury-person will be coming and going, with a busy schedule and so at times this may seem to be a little tiresome, or sometimes even a little scattered, however, they can offer a dexterity in thinking and manual skill that will benefit the whole family. This family member pushes the family to improve their thinking and knowledge and or their communication skills in some way.

Saturn is contributed by:

6. Addison Josephine W at 14°Ge57' (Orb 0°10')
2. Judy Z at 24°Ar18' (Orb 0°56')

The Saturn-person can be the central standing stone to the family, or in contrast, they can be the member who is without power and the ability and therefore require that others members of the family take on responsibility for them. But Saturn is about manifestation, getting things done, being practical and in this way the Saturn-person can be the one that makes the plans, lays down the rules - by joint agreement or not - and keeps everyone on schedule. They may therefore feel that they are the one who carries the  responsibility for the family's well being, and this belief may weight them down pushing them into a dictatorial attitude. Thus the family should respect this member's commitment to them, and make sure that the Saturn-person does not get left to "do everything" if this can happen then the family will benefit from the strength and commitment that this member is willing to give.

Midheaven is contributed by:

5. Mark Webb at 06°Le36' (Orb 0°23')
3. Jennifer Z-W at 07°Le21' (Orb 1°08')

The MC-person of the family will tend to be seen as a separate individual, the one that breaks away from the family and strives for their own lifestyle. If the family tries to hang onto this member then they may estrange themselves, however if the family is embracing of this member and their attitude then they gain a independent role model   who will still be emotionally involved in the family. The MC-person will been seen by the family to put a great deal of energy into their own success and career and because of that they may eventually be the most famous or most successful family member the one that brings to the household the greatest pride. The key issue with the MC-person is their independence and different lifestyle to the rest of the family which the family can reject or accept but in rejecting they will lose that family member.

North Node is contributed by:

1. Ethel Z at 23°Ar46' (Orb 0°25')
3. Jennifer Z-W at 02°Pi49' (Orb 0°53')
5. Mark W at 03°Pi13' (Orb 1°17')

The Node-person is a living container of the essence of the family. They are a chalice, a cup or even a grail. Thus they may be the "heir", the only child or the one who inherits the material, or spiritual wealth of the family, or the one who has inherited the "special" talent, the important or family-defining genes. The family may not be totally aware of the role that this members plays, but through them, through their life they carry the flame of the family and therefore they are the future of the family and almost the reason for the families existence. In family trees this could well be the member that is the ancestor of a future famous person or the famous or notable person themselves or, on the more shadowy side, this may be the person who is the living vessel for the karma of the family, wounded or weighted down in some way.

The Moon is contributed by:

1. Ethel Z at 20°Sc10' (Orb 1°06')

The Moon-person is the soul of the family and what they offer or receive, regardless of who they are, is the mothering, caring and the nurturing within the family. The Moon-person may therefore be the "mother" the one who prepares the food and stands at the hearth of the family or they may be the one who needs to be "mothered" drawing the nurturing attention to themselves, openly or manipulatively. This person needs to have emotional energy and nurture around them so they need to learn how to give this as well as receive it then the whole family benefits. So even if it's a small child in a family allow them the right to nurture others or the family pets. By allowing, and encouraging, the Moon-person to fulfil this role, there will be an increase in the whole family's feeling of being emotionally and physically supported.

Neptune is contributed by:

4. Donald Z-W at 11°Cp48' (Orb 1°18')

The Neptune-person moves at the centre of the web of the family. Emphatic to other members ups and downs, acting like litmus paper, and flowing with the emotional energy within the household. They will also have some connection with a grand-mother,  carrying her name or being like her in some way. But all of this can be a heavy load and for this reason they may be the one who is ill, or the one who is a victim in someway as they unconsciously define themselves as this collector and expresser of the families stress and worries.  But Neptune has another side, that of the spiritual, and or artistic and since it is the family that provokes this person's Neptune then the family can also stimulate the more creative expression of this planet. By allow the Neptune-person a role in the family of the omen-reader, the one who dreams the family's dreams, the one with a foot in the "other" world as well as encouraging the Neptune-person into music, and art then the whole family can gain from having such a creative, intuitive member within its ranks.

How Your Group Works

The Midpoint search shows what energy the group is working with. This is the theme of the group, what is created when these people come together.  Success, laughter, tears, intellect, possessiveness  - what will come out of the mixture of these people?  And does this help the group's conscious purpose, or is it contradictory to the collective intention?  In other words, the question that is answered by the midpoint pattern is: will the group be successful or fail?  The ideal is compatibility between the midpoint pattern and the group's desires.

Group Pattern 1

Number of Charts: 6;  Number of Hits: 6
Pattern Harmonic: 5th;  Vacant Points: 2

The web of this group is the 5th harmonic, which is the union of ideas with the world of form. Thus any group combined with this harmonic is creative, not necessarily only in the Arts, but also in their ability to bring ideas into manifested form.  If this is a family, then there is time for this family to perfect skills and nurture creativity; therefore, we would expect the members of this family who are part of this pattern to show some form of "artistry" in their approach to life. In any other group this harmonic can indicate that there is some special skill which brings the group together, some skill which they can use as is, or that they come together to perfect.

Pattern Point Combination: Venus and Midheaven
This family wants very much to encourage in all of its members a love of the arts, or a love of beauty. It will tend, further, to motivate each of its members to seek a high social profile, preferably in fields like fashion, colour, the arts or even diplomacy. It is an ambitious family, not so much for power as for status within the community, and this ambition can be used to advantage to fuel the individual members' personal careers. The negative side of this gentle midpoint is that the family, collectively or individually, could become so concerned with their external appearance, or so full of self-admiration, that the actual needs of the members could become sacrificed on the altar of vanity. If this is your family, then stimulate its engagement with beauty, colour and the arts, and encourage all members to pursue careers or at least lifestyles which contain these aesthetic elements. For through these the family can interact in a very loving and harmonious way, and share great joy in their collective or individual skills.

This pattern has a Vacant Point at 19°Ar12'
This pattern has a Vacant Point at 25°Sc12'
This group is only partially formed as there are quite a few vacant points. These points are like reserved places for new incoming individuals. As these individuals arrive the pattern will become stronger and manifest more noticeably in the group. An incoming individual can, however, bring in another, different, pattern.  Although less formed than this current one, this new pattern may suddenly, because of the new member's birth-chart, take the stronger focus. If this is the case, then the addition of this one person can result in the sudden changing of the basic nature of the group. All groups will have quite a few patterns that are future possibilities. This current pattern is the one that is most developed at the moment. It may mature, or it may be that another pattern will take the lead.  Patterns change as members move in and out of the group.
