Eleven doctors and medical technicians from the USAF and the Panamanian Ministry of Health treated over 7,000 patients, March 13 - 22 during a Medical Readiness Exercise (MEDRED) in El Cacao, Capira El Limite, and Arraiján, Panama.

Hundreds of local residents, some of whom have gone years without medical or dental care, attended the 10 day MEDRED exercise sponsored by the US Embassy, Southern Command and the local government. Among the volunteer groups that assisted with translations and logistics were las Esposas de Veteranos y Amigas Voluntaries, Sociedad Americana, Balboa Academy, Jubilados de Fuerzas Militares de Estados Unidos (Retiree Activities), VFW Post 3835 and it’s Ladies Auxiliary, Members of the US military retirement community and the VFW. Also Fundación Cristiana Médica Social y Cruz Roja de Los Santos, Girl Scouts, estudiantes de la Universidad de Panamá y Language Line. La Fundación Thomas McCormack also participated in demonstrating prosthesis of breasts and films for victims of the cancer of breasts.

 

Specifically, members of VFW Post 3835 included Post Commander, Arthur J. Littesy, Past Post and Past Department Commander, Edward C. Olds, Comrades Michael Robinson, and Joseph Gavins as well as members of Post 3835’s Ladies Auxiliary. President, Jessie L. Littesy, Secretary, Anita Littesy, 2nd Vice President, Jean Olds, Chaplain, Perla Fortner, L.A. Member, Mary Paxton with her 14 year old daughter, Elizabeth. They assisted the team by taking over 7,000 blood pressures, providing language translations, OB/GYN chaperoning, cleaning of dental instruments, vehicle upkeep, mechanical repair and vehicle operations, as well as providing logistical support. “Honoring the dead by serving the living” …the community and Veterans alike.
