Y's has a reputation for being the best snyth music around. For this soundtrack "Xanadu Vs Y's" they hope to keep up their reputation.
Track 1, "Opening" is a nice song, with a beat and three different synth's playing at once. This makes for quite a complex track that works rather well. Although it's not a tune that will haunt you for the day, you know its good music.
"Main BMG" is next, which is much more catchy and clearer as there's no drum track in it but sadly it's a very short track, but you'll be repeating it on merit, not for its longevity.
"Battle It Out" is the battle for of the OSV. The first part of the song a great, as it pounds out a vicious song. Then suddenly over the top of the song are a lot of sound effects, trying to showcase the in game sound. It ruins the song completely, and causes a massive sound imbalance. It then finishes with the victory music, but the song has died a death by then. "Starving BMG" is next which sounds very discordant in places but apart from that is another passable song, and thankfully short.
"Minor Boss Themes" actually takes every boss apart from the final boss's song and combines them to make a 3 and half-minute medley. It works fantastically. Each section of the song is different from the last and each has its own unique power to come across as evil and raw. This is a highlight song indeed. "The King Dragons Theme" is a powerful song, which again in ruined by a large smothering of battle sound effects, which destroys the main tune that sounds great in the background. An opportunity missed.
"Ending" is a beautiful tune that is ethereal, mellow and somewhat solemn too and is great synth music as the tune is very clear! "Open Your Heart" is a high pitched tune, that is beautiful and ethereal again, but has a catchy melodic echoing tune that drifts you off into the world of gaming. "Fountain Of Love" is another catchy song, that's a little more complex than previous couple, but like a few songs, is extremely short!
"Devils Step" is a mysterious song, that is once again let down by numerous sound effects placed over the song. Thankfully, some of them actually fit well while other infuriate. Every so often the song is suddenly interrupted by a small jingle before restarting to song again, as if you've moved up a level. Nice thinking, but like the sound effects, can annoy the listener too.
"In The Memory" is a great song, that's very catchy and reminds you of how old games' big tunes used to sound. It has all the makings of a dramatic scene and is possibly my favourite on the OSV.
The ending track "Come With Me" is a fast tune that comes across like a snyth vocal track. Once again, the song is catchy and involves many pitches of snyths and after a while, a drum track too, including toms!
Xanadu Vs Y's had the potential to be a classic snyth OSV. Most of the tracks live up to their potential, while the SFX clad ones crumble in seconds, but if you can find it, buy it for those old memories to be rekindled, you'll not be disappointed.
