2002 continued
The Gridiron Victoria 2002 Junior Season kicked-off on Sunday, 17 March at Croydon. After 7 rounds of regular season competition the top four teams met in the finals which commenced on May 19.  The Warriors came out on top over the Crusaders in first elimination final and the Miners despatched the Rangers in the second.
In the championship match the following week (26 May) the Miners were too good for the Warriors, taking out the match in convincing style 28 - 14.  The game was played in front of a significant crowd (around several hundred near the end) which created a healthy atmosphere with the result in doubt up until a few minutes from the final whistle.

The officials for the match were;
Referee - Tony Martin
Umpire - Steve Babinczky
Linesman - Bryan Currie
Line Judge - John Garnham
The seniors kicked-off in September.  Unfortunately the Crusaders were unable to field a team and the Blackhawk camp was in a similar position. Only four teams played, the Warriors, Miners, Rangers and Wildcats.  The Warriors and Rangers squared off in VicBowl XVIII at Endeavour Hills in late November, the Warriors again proving they have the edge when it counts, taking out the match 19 to 12.  The officiating crew was:

Referee - Tony Martin                  Field Judge - Paul Mercer
Umpire - Michael Bowen              Side Judge - Homer Legrand
Linesman - Bryan Currie              Alternate - Grant Garraway
Line Judge - Neil Nitche               Clock Operator - John Garnham
Back Judge - Anthony Whitehouse

A big congratulations to Tony on his first appearance as Referee in the championship game.  Well done !!!!

ADELAIDE NATIONALS
Paul Mercer, Bryan Currie, Neil Godfrey and Tony Martin represented the VGOA at the national tournament in Adelaide in March.  The event was an extremely well run affair managed by the host league, Gridiron South Australia.  Teams from Victoria, NSW, SA, ACT, Queensland and WA competed, with all games displaying high levels of skill and ability from each team.  NSW took out the championship match on the final day, defeating Queensland in a hard fought match.  The officials for all matches were co-ordinated and selected by AGOA, officials coming from all the involved states with the exception of WA and the ACT.  The four Victorian officials listed above thoroughly enjoyed their experiences in Adelaide and felt the event contributed greatly to their officiating developement.

The Victorian senior season concluded at Croydon on Sunday 17 August with Vicbowl XIX.  Before a significant crowd of bi-partisan supporters the underdog Berwick Miners proved too good for the Croydon Rangers taking out the match 36-28.

Both teams put on a terrific display of American Football, the high scoring game filled with plenty of successfull running and passing plays.  A seven man VGOA officiating crew managed the contest;
Referee - Tony Martin                Umpire - Grant Garraway
Linesman - Bryan Currie             Line Judge - John Garnham
Back Judge - Chris Falke            Field Judge - Michael Bowen
Side Judge - Kane Hooper
