The idea of preparing a
monograph on "land use" originated from Prof. Gurdeep Singh, Head, Centre
of Mining Environment (CME), Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad, I am thankful
to him also for his continual insistence, but for which it would not be possible
to complete the monograph in time.
The idea about generating a land use planning system for mining areas of India
originated from Prof. N. C. Saxena, whose effective encouragement in the matter
helped me a lot. The need for generating some land use planning guidelines
was also, at times, stressed by him.
For the initiation of my involvement with land use studies in mining areas,
in early 1980s, I owe to Prof. D. Mukhapadhyay the eminent Geologist, and
the then Head, Department of Applied Geology, ISM, Dhanbad. It was a turning
point for me, a student of geology, when I started looking towards land-use,
a subject of environmental geology.
I am thankful to Shri Manas Mukhopadhyay and Shri E V R Raju, external PhD.
Scholars of CME for providing information on some sources of literature on
global land use studies
I am extremely thankful to Shri Durga Das Chandra for typing the manuscript
and to Shri Ajay Bhattacharya for drafting the figures.
