Vol. 3 has the following -

Brought Typhoid to Melbourne

SALSETTE, barque, 420t, Capt. Edw. PURSSE: Liverpool, 11.8.40 - Melbourne, 2.1.41 with 190 migrants, 14 of whom died of typhoid, but ship cleared & entire crew absconded before serious situation was realized & quarantine could be imposed; & epidemic spread to Melbourne: + Account, "Perilous Voyages to the New Land," M. Cannon, (Vic. 1995)

Odd comment - the supplies of provisions had been shamefully bad. The worst case was that of the "Salsette", whose stock of fresh water failed causing much misery among the emigrants when placed on wretchedly mean allowance. On this ship the bread was disgraceful, and much of the beef and pork unfit for food. One-twelfth part of the emigrants on the "Salsette" died on the passage.

John Charles King sailed in 1838 for Australia. In Sydney he was so impressed with what he heard of Port Phillip that he returned to Ireland, wed Elizabeth Johnston, of Annandale, Scotland, and sailed again for Australia with his parents and members of his family. He arrived in Melbourne in the Salsette in January 1841 and immediately set up as an auctioneer and commission agent in Elizabeth Street. When the Melbourne City Council was established in December 1842 King was appointed the first town clerk at œ250 a year.
Thomas Mullaly (b.1790 Tuam, Galway, Architect Building Contractor, d.06.02.1843 at Swanston Street Melbourne of Pneumonia, Bur. Kew) wed c.1808 Sligo to Jane Hudson (b.1793 - 08 May 1858 born at Sligo, Sligo, and died at her son's residence, Geelong) Both may have arrived as passengers on the "Salsette" at Port Phillip 02.01.1841 although they are not listed as passengers.
