Shipwreck

Loss reported by Geelong Advertiser, 11 Sep 1841. On Tuesday 31 August the Paul Pry left the Heads at George Town and about 3pm on Friday Cape Schank bore north-east six miles. A sudden squall, like a whirlwind, laid the vessel on her beam ends. The cabin passengers were at dinner, and rushed upon deck. A passenger named Wait drowned, the other 13 took to the 13 ft rowboat, and made it to shore at 6pm where they proceeded to the station of Mr Barker. After 2 days they were able to board the Will Watch from the pilot station at the Heads, and so reached the Marine Hotel at the Beach.

The Free Press and Commercial Journal, Sydney for 20 Jan 1841 reports the Sea Horse steam ship of 250 horse power, sailed from Gravesend on 3 Sep 1840 for Sydney
The Hobart Courier for 26 Jan 1841 reported that news had arrived of a new steamer which sailed before the Ariadne left from Greenock 16 Sep 1840 - the Sea Horse was bound for Sydney with many passengers, and was intended to become a trader between Sydney and Hobart.

In Launceston Courier, 17 May 1841 - A detachment of the 51st Regiment under the command of Lieut Kirby, with 15 seamen from each of the discovery ships, left town on Weds morning at 11 oclock, for Mount Wellington, in search of Mr Huggins, one of the cabin passengers by the Sea Horse steam-vessel, also an apprentice boy of the name of Cooper, belonging to the same vessel - they having been missing since Sunday last. The party returned the same evening about 7pm, without having heard any tidings of them. The Hobart Courier 21 May records the eventual finding of Cooper who reached a hut containing kindly people, but Huggins was too weak to continue with him, so is mourned by Mr Laurie and Mr Webb who have been unable to find him.
