Thanks for your reply Elizabeth,
Regarding Richard Matthews he was sentenced to 7 years in 1830 and came to Hobart aboard The Eliza in 1831. He never went to prison but worked on a farm at Maquarie Plains on the Derwent river. He came to Victoria in 1840 aboard The Gem. (I was told this and cannot find any info on this) He married Margaret Murray from Tullamore Ireland and went to live in Geelong, later moving to Colac. Their children were all born at Geelong. They had 11 children and had a small farm at Modewarre near Geelong. He was a Machine Breaker and a lot has been written about them. He was given a Free Pardon and had a very long life living to be 84, he is buried at Colac.

All the Matthews family family which had arrived on the Garrow, except for the eldest son James, are shown on the John Barry Disposal List. Therefore it is assumed that James went to work for Mr. McFarlane at Argyll [sic] for the £20-0-0 plus rations per year as is shown on the Disposal List of the Garrow.
William Matthews is listed on the John Barry Disposal List as being in "Sick Quarters Melbourne". No further evidence has been found to prove that William and Margaret were the two persons who died after leaving the ship. The words "Sick Quarters Melbourne" may suggest that they did not perish at Williamstown.
