Charles Sago, one of 190 convicts transported on the Phoenix, 04 March 1828. Convicted at Middlesex Gaol Delivery for a term of life.
Charles Sago Convict, came on Phoenix, TofL 14 Sep 1842, #42/2214
From Old Bailey Proceedings
CHARLES SAGO was indicted for feloniously breaking and entering the dwelling-house of James Chorley , on the 17th of October, at St. George, and stealing 2 waistcoats, value 3s., and 1 gown, value 2s., his property
Prisoner's Defence. I had been to Blackwall, on board the Aurora; I was going as cook and steward on board of her. On going by the prosecutrix's door, there was a cry of Stop thief! that gentleman caught hold of me, and he took me to the watch-house; I had bought a new knife, and had another ready for the voyage. I have two written characters here from my last ship; the captains I have sailed with are not in town - the witnesses took nothing out of my hat. GUILTY - DEATH . Aged 25.
Charles Sago, male wed Mary Sibbald 1842 #4661 Church Of England St James, Melbourne
Charles Sago and Mary Sibbald christened Charles 1844, Margaret 1844, Benjamin 1846

From , on 3 Dec 2008,
I have Charles Sago's convict records, trial at the Old Bailey and copies of the inquest into his death from 1851 - he supposedly died when he rolled on his own knife in a state of intoxication, though on reading the inquest I believe he may have suicided - he stated "it was all my own doing" before he died. Charles was assigned to John Cubitt of Windsor NSW initially and then sometime between 1828 & 1837 Charles was transferred to work for the Ryries who had a property at Monaroo, NSW. Charles continued to work for William Ryrie at his property "Yering" in the Healesville VIC area from about 1837, where he and Mary had their first three children and where the whole family stayed until about 1848. William Ryrie must have been a kind master as Charles and his family stayed working for him even though Charles had received his TOL in 1842 and was free to leave. Most of the information regarding Charles and Mary's lives was provided by Betty Joyner, who also sent me a wonderful tale of Charles Sago's participation in an overland adventure to the Western District with excerpts from the book "Old Melbourne Memories" by Rolf Boldrewood aka Thomas Browne.
Charles' parents are John Sago and Sarah Carver, who were from Norfolk where their first two children were born, why they moved to London when Charles was born is unknown. It is believed they returned to Norfolk sometime after Charles' birth, but to date I have no proof of this.
